Pics of the new dd/tow rig... '00 K3500 CCLB

If they already had to replace the engine I would like to know what kind of abuse the rest of the truck has seen. Also, make sure the engine came from a reputable place.

If you do have to replace the pitman arm HAVE FUN!!! When I had to to do it on my 95 with the same miles it was a pain. First I broke the puller trying to get it off, so of course had to get another one. Then I had to cut a slice in it, heat up to a nice cherry red, put the puller on while it was still glowing, and then it came off. It was a PITA.

pickle fork will take that right off

Forget messing with one of those late 90's big blocks.... I've got one, the thing is a pile compared to the competition. Mine is a '98 C3500 with a 454/NV4500.

Compared to our Dodge diesels...... the thing sits on the ranch and sees little use.

Go find yourself a higher mileage Dodge diesel, even an older 94-98 Dodge 12v Cummins, should be able to get into one for a decent price. If you can't afford that, look for a 95-97 Ford Powerstroke. Those are also great trucks that seem to go for less money than the Dodges.

You can't imagine the difference between a big block and good diesel, it's no comparison. You are going to get 9mpg with that crew cab, and you'd get 15mpg out of a Ford PSD or Dodge Cummins.

If you are dead set on a 90's GM big block, my C3500 ext. cab dually is for sale. It's only got 89K on it too. if you can live without 4wd, mine will get better mileage than that crew cab due to the NV4500, and has a lot less mileage.

Yeah a 12v cummins would be a nice setup but people seem to want $12k+ for ones that are in ok shape that still have 200k miles on them...
Being that I'm a "ghost" in the credit world it's really hard to get financing. Most companies won't touch something that's over 100k miles unless its like an '03 or newer (we called two and that's what they said)... again it is probably just b/c I'm a ghost.
I don't mind the big block chevy's... I daily drive one now and I know it can tow just fine for my needs, oh and thanks for the offer but we already have the '00 C2500 that I would keep if I could live w/ a 2wd ;)

Down the road when I have some credit established and probably after college when I'm at a higher paying job I'll be able to look into other options...

Oh and good thinking on the engine Jason... I've been checking the truck out top to bottom and everything seems to check out. He said it has a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty so I'm thinking it was at one of the Chevy dealerships around here but I'm getting the paperwork on that tonight to be positive...

I'm going to take it for one last test drive tonight and if everything checks out then I'll get it.

Why in the world would it already have needed an engine at only 123,000 miles? That right there would make me pretty leery of the truck...either run ridiculously hard, or not maintained at all.

thats what i was wondering, something smells fishy.

Maybe not a bad thing though. If someone killed the 454 from lack of maintenance, chances are good that the front end was never lubed and everything has already been replaced recently.

Get the truck your happy with. If your happy with gas.. so be it.

I dont really see automatics as being a reliable "Tow" transmission. Unless its super beefy, and while the 4L80e is, its still no allison.

I got my diesel ext cab with a NV4500 with a 6.2. Motors been replaced, but the rest of the truck looked abused too. But the price was right, and so replacement was worthwhile.

Any used truck will need some maintainance. Some will take more. Some will take less. I'd rather throw 5k at a 3k truck then throw 3k at a 10k truck. a 10k truck means it probably had 0 maintanance.

a 3k truck had to have a lot just to keep running. That often means new parts. As long as its not rigged, you know what I mean by that.

Tow with them every day. That will kill them that quick.

You could find a 01 or newer big block. The get as good of fuel mileage as those 6.0l fords diesels do.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I don't want to come off in the wrong way but I like this truck, I know it'll be something I can work on and keep running for many years to come and the price is right so sure a newer truck (or an older cummins rig w/ another couple thousand in new parts) would be nice but this fits my current financial situation and will be a good reliable truck...

I was planning on getting it tonight but plans changed... I went and gave it one last test drive because I forgot to check a few things (such as the cruise control) and I'm still in love... does it need a couple cosmetic things here and there? Sure. But like Pookster said the price is right and I don't mind putting a little money into it.

My grandma (who has incredible credit) said she trusts me and is willing to co-sign. So she is going over there with me tomorrow night to be my co-signer which will get me a heck of a lot lower interest rate compared to me on my own...

It's probably going to my sister who is in college in Texas... If she doesn't want it then we'll probably trade it in and get her something smaller...

IMHO, diesel on top of the IFS is asking for carnage. IMHO, diesel is not worth it unless you tow. So, if you're going to tow and get out on sand, go gentle.

Well guys and gals I'm the proud owner of an '00 K3500 CCLB BB454 4L80E & 4.10's

With my grandma as the co-signer I managed to get 6.9% interest (yeah its insanely low for an 18 year old haha).

I'll get pics and stuff in a little bit but we're taking off for Texas tomorrow and I won't be back until Monday evening... so you'll have to hold off until then :)

I was messing around with the truck this morning and had a question... what is the correct sequence for shifting from 2WD to 4Hi or 4Lo? I've been shutting the engine off and putting the tranny in neutral then moving the TC... I don't want to grind the gears so what's the correct sequence to change the TC?
I drove around in 4wd this morning and when I turn tight on the pavement the front jumps... is it just from the one extra tire having power up front or do they have some form of a G80 that was offered for front ends?
My RPO codes say the rear is a GT5 G80 so I know the rear is 4.10's and has a G80 locker but what code explains the front?

Sounds like typical manner of a 4wd truck on pavement. I beleive its called " crow hopping"

did you get a manula with it?? if so read it.

to change from 4hi to 4lo, stop, put the tranny in neutral and shift it, then drive.

4wd on dry pavement is not good for any truck, you getting ready for snow in cali?

Are you seriously asking if there is a code for the gears in the front of the truck?

Come on Avery I know you are brighter than that.
