Pictures of my 'braced' homemade shakle-flip

For a second I thought I was on PBB...

What's interesting is there is still some deflection on the spring bushing I suppose that's going to happen without a johnny joint at the other end of the spring. Still amazing the amount of angle in that JJ.

The other end of the spring is still being twisted so the bushing is compensating for that, two of those joints would probably fix that problem though. I personally like the setup another member on here had where the spring pad that mounted to the axle was a pivot point. With a setup like that the springs only need to move up and down, there is no twisting.

i will say this for the 4th time in this thread... as an INPUT to HELP others trying to get some positive from this thread... i have done this EXACT same mod.. i have wheeled my k5 hard.. i have SNAPED my leave spring in half... with this shackle... while trying to get up a rock ledge that kinda got crazy/lil air time.. with that EXACT same set up.. it did not break, i drive my truck daily and it works great, just weld it properly and you will be fine... so all you people trying to get anyting out of this thread. go for this mod, it works!

If you don't mind taking the rivets out you can also use stock rear spring (front eye) mounts as a shackle flip. I have been using those on mine for almost 4 years now with no problems. They cost about $20 each new and they're still available from GM. :waytogo:

Wow , what has the thread become :eek1:

I am so glad I didn't get hurt this weekend wheeling with A/T's

Glad you made it

They're actually pretty decent. I used to have 33 a/t's before the tsl's

i have no idea what went on in this thread. my only advice would be if anyones gonna post pics learn to take criticism. not pointing at anyone specifically. myself i have no fabbing skills whatsoever so i won't down anyones. if you think it's safe and can trust your skills then go for it. if you have ANY doubt don't risk it.

i laughed more in this thread than anything.

that is all :D

Built not bought..........ok so I bought some 7" shackles from kurt once. I didn't have any 3/8" plate and my drill press sucks.

Everything else is homebrew.

Now that's what I'm talking about!! Tell me you have a build thread &/or a photo gallery somewhere!

For everybody else, this is what you do to become a good fabricator! To the OP, keep it up, you'll be fine & when you look back at this you'll see it as a step to an awesome truck like you see here!

I assume that clark didn't just start out being an awesome fabricator. He decided one day he wanted to make a modification to his blazer to make it work better for his uses & got out in the garage & did it. Later on he thought, "you know, I think that if I did "this" _______ (fill in the blank), the blazer would work even better! I think I'll try it."

Pretty soon he had a blazer that is killer & a TON of experience working it out & fixing his mistakes.

I say that's a win-win for him.

Later,
Buddy

No sorry I don't have a build thread but you can find a lot of my stuff at CarolinaK5.com. Its been about 5 years in the working and happened exactly like you said. I'd see something on the net and thought it would be good for my rig. So I'd build it or something along the same lines. I say if you think it will work then try it, just remember to plan for if it doesn't work. Like don't throw away old brackets and/or parts until you've got all the bugs worked out. I don't suggest slapping something on your truck and take it out on the interstate at 80mph. I've got a little place 1/2 mile from my house where I go to test all mods I've done.

nice rig. i actually like your bumper alot. make it yourself??

clarkjw,
Can I get more pictures of your cage. Very interesting. I thought you had to tie it into the front dash in one way to make it effective. I would like to get away with it if I can because I am a big guy and need all the space I can get. Wher did you tie it into in the front. Very nice truck, I want to get mine like that.
