Pipe bender cage STARTED TODAY!!! pics inside

hey, um, uh, pipe isn't safe for a rollcage. Iguess if you use TONS of pipe and over build the bajezuz out of it it would still not be safe for a rollcage :D :D :D :doah: Looks liek a good design though, you plan to add some sort of fender?

I agree, DOM is the requirement for the santioned bodies. HREW is OK for weekend warriors unless you are traveling 100+ MPH and may roll. Designing a cage for overkill, using more inferior parts is not my idea of a clean look.

Schedule 40 pipe is not for cages. 3/4 roll-over may be the most serious flop he sees. I believe a cage should be built for worse case scenarios with the ability to support a 4500 pound with the reasonable force that can and does occur in serious rolls, not a simple flop with the idea that it "should be ok."

Very little force is exerted on the truck during a tip over. The cage is taking very little force if any on a tip over. Sheet metal bending and roof line bending in a tip over may all that occurs on a tip over. I am referring to a real roll, 360 degrees + and pipe not being safe.

well the fact of the matter is that he has already built hte cage and probably isn't going ot change it. I agree that for a hardcore trail rig ERW tube is the minimum and designed well can result in a very sturdy cage. Any sort of race vehicle that see's excessive speeds should have DOM or 4130 but for probably everyone on the forum ERW is probably sufficient and more cost effective. My enternal cage is 4130, 12 points in the cab alone. The exo is just erw since it's not protecting my life, just the truck. Pipe is better then nothing at least he is trying to be safer then not having a cage and going out and performing bonehead wheeling acrobatics.

so anymore progress on the poop pipe cage:D

It was raining so there's not much progress. I finish welded my seams and added two more pieces before I had to pack it up for the day.

I knew this would start a huge debate on materials that are safe/not safe...
I still trust what I'm building. It is better than just sheet metal. When I get additional funds I'm going to finish this off as an exocage which is also going to go through the body and tie into a seat mount which will hold 2 Beard seats and 5 point harnesses. Everything is going to be mounted directly to the frame. I'm not worried about creaking body panels, I'm not worried about stress on the frame, I just know that the more points I've added to the frame, the sturdier the frame has become. Right now I'm tied in at 10 points starting at the firewall and going back. I hope to have at least 4 more points in the back and 6 more points up front by the time I am finished.

This rig drives on the street, but no more than 55 mph (estimated) and the trails I use are mostly windy paths with lots of trees, some rocks and mud. The most I see happening is a flop, I don't know anybody in the area that has completed a full roll, not even the guys driving buggies. For what I have invested in this pipe structure and the amount of times I'll be close to a complete roll, I'm satisfied with pipe.

It's still better than square or exhaust tubing, PVC pipe, black pipe and much safer than most guys who think a smittybuilt light bar with it's tripple chrome plating will keep them safe... even if it does have 3 hoops and 7 KC daylighters on it!!!

What I got done between rain...

What I'd like to have done. Then add sheet steal panels bolted to tabs between the pipe to create a flat bed.

I am not an engineer but I would support the center of the main tube also. 2 bars running from where your other bars go outward running inward to support the bend in the maintube behind the cab.

That was a concern I had but I wasn't sure what to do about it. Thanks.

I would run the setup just like the original pic and add in 2 more bars from where the outward moving bars start at the bottom and make 2 new inward bars converge at the bend in the maintube above the cab.

This is what I would do. The green line is a slider support assuming your doing sliders.

DOM, HREW, pipe, ha! I drive 70mph sometimes with other vehicles doing 70mph coming the opposite direction. And all I have is a (sometimes) fiberglass top! Living on the edge...oh yeah. :D

I already have sliders in place and right behind your green line is a bar connecting the slider to the frame. It is at the end of the slider right behind the sheet metal of the cab and it ends right behind the spring perch in that picture.

I like your additions but it will be a while before I can get them done. I was getting laid off this week but I lost my cool because of some other thing that were on my mind (couldn't afford to live in my house, losing girlfriend, got sued and can't afford an attourney) and I walked out. I didn't get payed much there anyways but it was stupid of me to walk out when I could have at least finished the week.

woah! sorry to hear all that. stay strong.

Im gonna put my $.02 but came to the end of the post---keep on keepin on, dont let anything that wont kill you get to you.

and my $.02

I like the design, not my choice of materials but it will be safer than nothing at all. and to add some fuel to the fire: One of THE BADDEST truck I have EVER seen---bgreens' truck---was done using poop pipe

still--not my choice of material---but it works.

That rig was my inspiration. I followed his buildup until he blew the engine. :wink1:

I went wheeling yesterday. Here's the link to my webshots... http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2320452590100714699NdEHmr?vhost=good-times

Got stuck in a sink hole while going up a washout. Took a little while for my rear tires to climb the 6 foot ledge on one side and the 4 foot dig I made on the other side. I'm glad I had my winch, this is probably the 6th time this year it has saved my butt from a serious stuck. Only got a few pics of that since it was dark by the time we got out.

p.s. I want GM of the month when this rig is "done". :D

"want in one hand and "poop" in the other and see which one fills first"

thats what my grandpa would say everytime I wanted something. It usually meant i was getting "poop"

It's funny how that fits in this thread:haha:

They are never really done. So I guess no nominations for you. That and if you ask for it instead of having someone give you a genuine nomination do you really deserve it? If you won, then new people to the forum would think poop pipe cages were encouraged and we can't have that.:D
