pipes straight up through the hood

iv seen racecars and diffrent offroad vehicles that have them and on some different one ive seen where they have a rubber hse with some fittings on the end and it goes right in to the pipe kind of near the top of the oppening what is this hose for?

PCV. They have breathers that are in their valve covers, they are plumbed(by rubber hose) to the exhaust header where the force and flow of the exhaust actually sucks the pressure out of the crankcase. We have a set on my dad's race car. Lots of drag and circle track racers use them.

In this really crappy picture you can see the two of them in the driver side valve cover(one goes to each collector).
