PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS I WANT EVERY PERSON ON THIS SITE TO READ!

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

That's sad to hear.

When we go wheelin', we often have young children with us. If anyone gets stuck and needs pulled, we make the kids get out and stand with an adult a safe distance away. You can never be "too" safe...

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Around ever corner of life there is something waiting to end it. It takes just the right combination of luck and brains to make it through and unfortunatly in times like this, some are more lucky than others. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Yea, I learned that leasson a couple years ago in high school... I was pulling out a friends blazer from a snowy field and we had used two tow straps hooked together with ANOTHER tow strap (one of those rope ones with HOOKS on the ends) /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif and it snaped in the middle. /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif Hooks came flying back at both our trucks. All I saw was pieces of black platic flying everywhere...I didn't know what had happened. It turns out the hook that flew into my truck smashed through my grill into my radiator. If it had been 1 foot higher it would have been perfectly aligned with my head /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif. My friend was looking out his driver side window and his hook smashed just above his drivers side talighight...meaning just 2 inches to the left would have been a whole different story.

Learned quite a lesson that day.

-But bc it was his cheapo strap that broke he bought me a brand new grill

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Terrible /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Its sad. and i am never going go do that metheod again. Only 6" Straps!

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Wow, that is terrible. We all can learn a lesson about Jeeps. Having no window, or actually anything, between your head the outside world can be hazordous to your health. I remember I snapped a strap pulling a friend out and the strap, with no clevis, smashed his windshield with him in it. He didnt get hurt, the windsheld saved him.

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

No way a rear window would have helped in the least.

It had nothing to do with being in a Jeep. Can and does hapeen in any vehicle.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER hook two straps together with a Clevis. This is
why my club has a rule rule about no attached hooks.

My best friend Died today at age of 37 Over a basic simple mistake!
We where at our truckwars/mudbog for The Moonlight stompers On
Duffield RD.

After he broke his front end he desided to still play in 2wd. I had
left and didn't see it happen but what happend was everyone got in a
hurry and lots of trucks stuck with dozers and 6" straps all over
the place ...
David was an advacate of safety But we'll never know what went
through his head this time... But they broke the cardanal rule os
Hooking 2 (small) 3" straps together with a Clevis (wich is like a
rocket and what killed him)and David was unfortunate to have the
brand new strap on his Jeep (they where out of 6" straps that day so
he bought a 3") so when the strap let loose from the other Jeep
while David was truned around looking backwards being pulled out
from the back...The Clevis hit him in the head and killed him
instantly.."

If you have never seen the proper way to join two straps then get
with somebody that has.

There is two ways
to do it. One is with a wooden dowel used as a pin or piece of hard
wood. If it fails it will fall to the ground and usually not get
shot out. Even if it does get shot it will not have the weight and
not be any where near as dangerious.
You stick one loop through the loop of the other strap. Put the
dowel in that and it will join them.

The other way is to double back the loop or thread them together.
Problem is it will be hard to undo after tension but its not going
to become a projectile.

I will take pictures and post them if you want to see how it is done.

My condolances to this mans family. Lets not take his death in vain and learn from it and prevent this from ever happening again.

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Good idea about the sticky.
I had just met this guy a couple weeks ago at a pig roast/wheeling weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif Terrible thing.

I think posting the pictures of the proper way to hook two straps up would be a good idea. Seems hard to believe that a wooden dowel could hold. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

Even better is to combine the second and first way. Do the loop back but place a stick/dowl in the loop before it gets locked down. Then pull out/break the dowl to loosen the locked loops when done...

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

We sometimes use an old Tire in the middle if we have to use 2 straps Together.

Re: PLEASE BE CAREFULL WITH STRAPS

I forget what a bowlin is called when you do it on two ends of a line, I believe it's a sheeps bend, but that is in my oppinion the ONLY way to connect straps or any kind of rope that will be pulled in that manner.

Why?

You can always break a bowlin, by hand, no matter how tight it gets. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Done.

I am doing a outline on a "recovery safety write up". I just asked permission to dedicate it to David's memory by his family and friends on the MI Jeepers site.

I would be a very happy guy to never hear something like this happening again. Our sport is about good times, good friends but there are dangers and you here a few stories a year about freak stuff like this. This was preventable but it is so easy to get in a hurry and not think about "if this safe way to do this".

I hope that people can take something away from it and take the extra time to try to prevent anything like this from ever happening again. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
