in the one pic you can see the big hole in the carrier assbly the gear bolt to . if there are 3 total its a cov-lock ,if 4 total it open or locker, and if 4 look in the side holes for spider gears if there is any its open. if locker you should be ably to turn the pinon and both tires turn the same way. as above 4.56 and the other # are date code for gears.

I thought i saw a 41 11 on the close up, if so its 3.73s

Good call sapper, I was just typing that up.....41 ring gear teeth, 11 pinion...41/11=3.727272 OR 3.73. With that said, its either open or GovLoc.

The number he gives also shows 3.73 gears (41 11), not 4.56 (41 9). You can't tell by looking if it has a detroit (it would be inside the carrier). The best way to check that is to spin one tire and see if the other spins the same way or opposite. If the other tire is spinning the opposite direction the carrier is open or has a gov lok. If both want to spin the same direction it has a detroit.

yea you can, just look and see if you can see the spider gears, if you cant and there are 4 holes on the outside of the carrier then you have a detroit.

he :dunno: or at least i THINK he did

and people call me dumb, thats why i said i think, good call to get you the right info:blush:

ok I got the gears worked out......now what about the D-locker?...How do I verify that?.... I am by myself, so turning wheels and what-not is kinda hard to do alone.

Sorry bout that, I was always told its the first 2 sets of #'s out of the last 3, the last # being the year. I dont mind admitting I was wrong.

Ummm...there's not a much easier way to figure it out. Get the brake drums and pinion just high enough off the ground to be able to turn...and give it a whirl. If it was out of a CUCV military truck then it almost def. has a detroit.
