portable CO2 Tanks... Power Tank?

The hose

The regulator on a bracket I made. The 1/4" plastic line goes to an electric solenoid for the air horns :D

This is the closest reference I could find it may be the f model(mine is about three years old. looks the same but brass construction)http://www.fisherregulators.com/products/literature/1301/

I leave it on all the time and get no pressure loss unless I get cut off.:ears: :angry1:

I have tested filling my tires and can refill one tire from 10psi to 26psi about 12 times. I am happy with that and the dive shop charges $6 to refill. I looked into CO2 but it couldn't be used while laying on its side, and I wanted the protection and security of keeping it in the tool box. Hope this is usefull to someone.

Tim, that was a top notch reply right there. Thank you. Here in California, IIRC, you have to have your divers cert to even get tanks filled. I can have a friend do it anyways. If you kept it standing up could it be used as a CO2 tank. I am going to have to look into this. Awsome job Tim.

I think the only real difference between the tanks is the valves, and some being steel and some aluminum. The valves have different psi ratings, most that I have seen pop at 2000psi. I am not familiar with a scuba or nitrogen valves. Just remembered that some tanks have a tube that goes from the valve to the bottom of the tank to pick up the liquid. It's been a while that tink'd around with these things. But from the tanks that i've messed around with, the valves are interchangable.

Im no diver and was able to get a bottle of CO2 no prob. Welding shops very easy.

No. I was refering to the dive tanks being filled with O2 at a dive shop. When I went diving with my buddies about 10 years ago they had to show their divers cert to get the tanks filled. Part of my question was will a welding supply fill a dive tank with CO2. Do you think they would?

I picked up a 2.5lb CO2 tank at a garage sale this weekend, with regulator and a nail gun for $10. Would it be worth trying to mount this in my truck, or is it really too small for much?

If they have the fitting for that valve, otherwise not. See, Co2, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Nitrous and Helium tanks have different valves. Not to say you couldn't use a helium tank for Co2, but if the shop doesn't have the proper adapter they probably won't fill it. If they are a big shop they should have the adapters needed. You don't need anything other than a certified tank and money to have a welding supply shop fill your tank. Like I said, it's been a while so i'm going of memory.

I've seen people use these smaller tanks to run their ARB units. Maybe you can use it as an emergency tire fill or something like that.

Are they "proportional"? IE, if you can air up 20 tires with a 10lb tank, could I air up 4 with the 2.5lb tank?

You can base it of this chart

I do not think this SCUBA type cylinder is designed to be used with CO2. If you want to use CO2 I would suggest a CO2 cylinder. That said I just offered this as an alternative because we all try to help each other here. The two dive shops I have dealt with around here do not require a dive certification to get it filled but I have explained to them what I use it for and even showed one the setup because he was interested for his own truck. I do have friends that have cert. to get it filled if it ever becomes an issue.

I picked up a 2.5lb CO2 tank at a garage sale this weekend, with regulator and a nail gun for $10. Would it be worth trying to mount this in my truck, or is it really too small for much?

That size would be a good candidate for paintball :saweet: (I wonder how many shots I could get off that  :D) but I think way too small for a tire (even stock size).

You can base it of this chart

Never saw this chart before but I guess a 2.5 might be worth a try, if you already have it try it out and let us know. I might start leaving a paintball cylinder in my other truck for emergencies if I can come up with a compact setup

It looks like it might be a good backup system. Its small enough that I could mount it under the driver's seat, it wouldn't take up any space really, and I could fill a tire or 3. For the price I paid for it, it was well worth it. The regulator itself has to be worth more that $10.

I'm kicking myself now though. I had a 20lb setup for years that I used to run kegs at parties. I haven't had a kegger for 5 or 6 years, so I ended up giving the tank and regulator away about a year ago. I never knew they could be so useful.

eta: they sell small power tanks at Lowe's here. For running nail guns and stuff. They are pre-filled and exchangeable. But, they are only like 20oz tanks I think.

****UPDATE****

if any one cares I have a little update.... I purchased a NO2 bottle from a guy off craigslist a few weeks ago for $50... add in the kicker it still had some NO2 in it (not sure but it sure is heavy)..... ordered my fixed 150 psi regulator that came in yesterday ( ordered and took a dang week to get here ... paid a little much for shipping and handling than I expected.... their site didn't give an exact shipping cost said that they ship UPS standard so no surprise $11.95 :eek1: ) Any who...... got it all hocked up and worked GREAT!!

Here is a pic installed in the Blaz-R.....
