posi into non posi carrier?

I have the old 10 bolt posi axle I yanked out of my blazer because my truck ate the ring gear. I was just going to toss this in the scrap heap. A buddy of mine has a buggy that doesn't have posi.

What I am wondering is if I can take the guts of the posi and put them in the non-posi carrier or if I would need to swap the carrier as well? If the later I would just assume weld the spider gears.
 
The posi is a carrier in its self.
Well its more then just the carrier. Its the spring pack and clutches that go with it.

What I was getting at is I didn't know if I could pull the spring pack and clutches out and stuff them in a non-posi differential. Or if the posi differential was specifically machined for the spring pack and clutches. This is all factory GM stuff as far as I know.

Ok thanks wasn't sure if your were trying to "flame" me lol.

Probably what we will end up doing, because I know if I was to suggest this posi carrier I would wind up doing all the work. Not that setting up a set of gears is hard or anything but I have enough of my own projects as is.
 
If I'm reading this right, then if your buddy's rear end is the same as the one the posi came out of, then you can just pull his chunk out, put his ring gear on your posi and put it all back together.

Of course the axle splines have to be the same, and you will have to do a setup, but the carrier should fit right in.

Ya that part I know. Was hoping to avoid setting up the ring/pinion. Setting the ring gear is easy but setting the pinion depth without a press is a pain. I may plop it in there and see if the pinion depth lines up with the new carrier. If it does then setting the carrier shims is no big deal.

Otherwise I'll take it out put his back in and weld it. To be honest I'll probably just weld it. I have to much to do already. Welding is sounding better every minuete. lol

When I was younger, I was over at an older friend's house, and he had heard about welding the gears to make it a "spool".
Since he was having traction problems with his street racing, he borrowed his father's Lincoln buzz box and welded up the gears.

Darn car just kept stalling out when he tried to drive it off.

Since I was about 14, I really did not understand why his father kept yelling about "ring and pinion" over and over when he came home..........

This is an off road buggy only so shouldn't be a problem
 
I reminded him of it years later. He told me that one of his friends had told him to "weld the gears".

Those were the first ones he saw......

He's telling you that the carrier is integral to the "posi" and you just can' t take the guts out and interchange the parts.
 
Thanks guys. I'm going to try and swap the carrier and see if the pinion depth matches up. If it does then we will use this posi. If it doesn't I'll put the old differential back in and just weld it.

The pinion depth should not change if you are using the same gearset in the same housing, changing the carrier should only effect the backlash.
 
True story in theory.
It's what I'm depending on. But we're talking thousands of an inch tolerences. I could see manufacturing specs between carriers tolerating some differences. My fingers are crossed.

I think you'll be fine, I think your backlash will most likely change, because from my experience the carriers aren't consistent enough to have the same backlask with the same shims. But since you have the same gearset and same housing, the pinion depth won't change, you aren't even taking the pinion out I am assuming. And in order for the carrier to effect the pinion depth, that means one of the carriers would have to be machined on a crooked lathe or something. And a lathe is usually pretty consitent as far as runout goes. So if you are just worried about pinion depth, then you're probably fine. But if you are hoping you can just pop it in without changing the carrier shims, you probably won't get that lucky.
