Is it possible to get a decent 76-90 4x4 k5 with a good engine for 4000 or under? I'm a highschool student with a limited budget. and i would want one thats not lifted and fairly close to stock with a good engine and tranny of course

Bought one!

Go to my latest post if you want to see what the problem is and offer me a solution. Thaks

I would think so in your area. I have seen a few good deals on CL in Alb. You don`t have rust there, so that puts you way ahead of me. You realy only had about 5 engine options, straight 6-rare, not very desirable, 305/350/400. I would look for an 87 or newer with the fuel injected 350, a std trans would also be my choice, as they are pretty bullet proof. The only other trans choices would be a 3 speed auto turbo 350, or a 4 speed auto 700R4. I think the 700R4 came out inlike 82 or 83.

everyone assumes we dont have rust down here but we do I've seen some rusted out blazers around town. And ya i was looking for a 350. How much of a difference is there between a 350 and 305?

They're out there. You may have to drive a little to get to them, but you can find them. I drove from north central FL to Woodstock, GA to get mine.

Body was straight, no rust and all stock with a fairly new crate 350 in it. I paid $4,300 for mine, which was border line too high. There was one guy on here that got his for $700 from an old couple and if I recall correctly, all it needed was a minor transmission repair. The Blazer itself was in great shape. There are deals to be had, you just gotta look for them.

One piece of advice though- check out the "What to look for when buying a K5" thread and heed the good advice you've already received in this thread. It will save you a lot of time, money and potentially bad effects to your well being, and make the experience a good one for you. As you have probably already gathered, these guys are a wealth of knowledge and share it freely. Best place you could've come as a new K5 owner.

Good luck in your search!

Just keep an eye out in the local bargain traders and cragslist. youll find one eventually. i got lucky... i found a stock k5 with new paint, freshly rebuilt engine tans. and t-case, ran perfectly for $2250 :thumb:

I have had the best luck with Craigslist and just running across random vehicles for sale on the side of the road. Got my 1987, 350, 700R4, fresh paint, stock (no lift) for $1,500. Only real problem is some rust at the tailgate hinges. Keep the ear to the ground - you will come up with something.

Does this seem like a good idea?

I called and the info I got was its freshly painted has new tires, and is four wheel drive. I asked about the engine and she had no idea what size so how do I check that? It says 2500 but I spoke with her on the phone and she said she would take 2100. So good deal?

Well first it's a car dealer so this vehicle at best is worth half of what they ask, and now it's listed for $2100 so yeah they will take 2100.
I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for that one.

So something is horribly wrong with it?

probably not. they are just basing it on the fact its a dealer. meaning they have no money into it, 500-1000bux max and are trying to double their profits. Doesnt mean there is anything wrong with it. Youd have to take a look, a 2000 dollar truck can get real expensive fast if a ton of crap is wrong with it. That one doesnt look bad from the photo but thats not saying much. Fresh paint always has me concerned, what are they hiding, was there any body damage, rust, etc. Id rather have a faded factory paint job than something thats been resprayed.

Id pay that much for it if it drives good. Looks nice. Dont get a 305. They get the same gas mileage it seems but just have less power than a 350. If you find one with a 400 i think you will like it more, i love mine, so much more torque to get you moving. I didnt notice any mpg difference from my 305 to my 400 using the same carb.

Not saying you need one at all, i just like mine, a 350 would be fine. BUt i paid $1200 to have my 408 built. I can beat my friends $4000 383 on the sand drags so it makes me happy haha. :thumb:

Didn't you have a buddy build the 408 or is that another guy? And haha I know a 350 would be fine but bigger is better haha :D

A friend of a friend built it. You just gotta look around for people really. I bought mine for $2500, and spent $1200 on the engine, and $500 on the new tranny, so i came out right around your price range with a pretty solid drivetrain i think. If i were to do it again i would find one with a great body and frame, and blown motor or trans and pick it up real cheap and redo the drivetrain so i know what i have, instead of sitting on a possible time bomb that someone could possibly have just filled with lots of lucas or stop leak or something to get it by for the sale, then have it crap out and be out lots o cash. Just my thoughts.

That's a good idea but I'd be Nervous about buying one with a blown engine or tranny. Are transmissions and engines easy to find for a k5? If it all totaled out to under 4000 i wouldn't have to worry about it falling apart because like you said I would know what I was sitting on!

Without actually looking at it in person no one can say whether it's worth the asking price, half as much,or twice the price. From the picture, and being in Lubbock,I'd say the body should be decent and if it's got no real mechanical issues it's well worth the asking price. It could be it was painted due to sun-burn,but always have to watch for repaired wrecks.

. Are transmissions and engines easy to find for a k5? !
Lol. Type in chevy small block on craigs list and you will find them all over. And the cool thing about chevy stuff is all the transmissions will bolt up to either a big block or small block. Be it 700r4, th350, th400, sm465, 4L60. 4L80 etc. All have the same bolt pattern on the bell housing. But if your not prepared to do alot of work on it right away dont go this route. I on the other hand spent too much for a bad engine and tranny combo and a body in sub par shape. To me body work is worse than drivetrain work.

If you're not mechanically inclined, as I think you mentioned earlier, buying a truck that needs a new motor and/or transmission is going to be a bad idea. You're throwing your money away and won't have a truck to drive.

I'll say it again: Save your money all summer and then get the best truck you can. Don't screw around with the ones that need work. With these trucks the "work" often never ends...
