Potential of stock TBI heads?

being as the blocks are exactly the same as the earlier Single piece rear main seal engines(except they don't have the fuel pump drive shaft hole drilled), He is inncorrect.

my Vortec not only has the boss for the pushrod, but its machined too. there's no pushrod lobe on the cam, but everything else is there.

One thing I've not seen covered here is the valve seats. In the heads on the truck (& the Vortecs) the valve seat(s?) are induction hardened. I know the exhaust is and I *think* the intake is as well.

If the used heads need the valve seats ground the odds are extremely high that the grinding will go thru the induction hardening. The two high end shops I know of around here won't even try grinding, they install new exhasut seats & work fromt here. To have that done to a stock head runs almost as much as a ready to go Vortec head.

FWIW My engine builder has had leakage trouble using quality intake gaskets on the 4 bolt heads. Depending on the customer he may not do everything top shelf, but he has minimum standards for components that are reasonably high.

so you're going to go through all that work reworking heads, and not change the intake. :screwy: the stock intake is a restrictive POS. hell, even leaving the heads stock and swapping the intake wouldnt be that bad of an idea. FWIW, modifying the TV cable bracket isnt that hard.

Umm... Who said anything about leaving the intake stock. Maby you should reread my last post.......:eek1: I suggested a better intake.
Did you even bother to go over to third gen and read thru that thread i posted a link to?. The numbers and dyno and track times bear witness that 193 are not that bad of a head if some mild porting is done. Mild porting does not cost that much to have done. Its when you get into bowl work and getting everything right on the flow bench where the $$ start to add up.
A set of 64cc TBI heads with mild port work shouldn't cost more than $600.
Thats a lot cheaper than a set of Vortecs and a manifold.
The title of this post is " Potential of TBI heads" I am simply providing info on them and how to make them into a good head for a truck.. They work fine for me. I like them. I cant believe you are getting bent out of shape just because I can provide data contrary to your beliefs.:screwy:
