I'm thinking about having my entire k5 baked in powder coat instead of paint. I'm thinking like a satin silver??

Any thoughts. Reasons not to? Disregard cost.

not sure but filler work materials don't like the temps powder coat cures at. so all your metal work would have to be done by hand if you want a perfect body

Isn't powder coat more stiff or rigid than paint. Hate to see you go off-road and twist the body and watch a big section of color pop off.

Before he went and got himself killed, friend of mine ran a custom trailer shop. Built boat trailers, utility trailers, whatever you wanted.
Worked mostly in aluminum.
One day I drove up and he had a sign up that said " We can hot-dip galvanize anything!"
I asked, and he said he had found a company out in Texas that had galvanizing vats big enough to do the biggest trailer he could make and then some.

So he was adding galvanized steel trailers to his lineup.
Then he said that if I stripped it down, he would galvanize my whole truck........

I declined, but I have often wondered.........

I tend to agree with you, but, I seriously doubt the PC will pop off with body flex. It bonds really well to properly prepped steel. If it's been grit blasted correctly it ain't comming off. At least I would have to see it to believe it. OP, I am powder coating my 8' crew cab bed but as a primer base so to speak. It's been done and it becoming more popular for this as it's much tougher and thick enough as a primer that it can be sanded and painted over. I've done the front bed wall, wheel wells so far. I'm having the entire bed floor done too. And the bed sides as well. I'm all for powder coating.

I did that to my Blazer about 12 yrs ago. Well most of it anyway. Did the hood, both fenders, both doors, tailgate and the driver's side quarter panel. Had the place put two layers of powder coat by Cardinal on it. Cost was about 2k. All the parts were dent/ding free. Had all the parts chemically stripped at a shop and then they dipped them in zinc phosphate to prevent flash rusting.
Any ways, after about 5 yrs of coastal California fog it started looking like cr*p. I saw bubbles starting to form on the hood, then they grew larger - yep rust. It's at the point now to where I have to replace those panels and traditionally paint it. That's fine, when I first did this I figured it was an experiment to begin with. I have a post on here with pics when I first did it, but I can't find it right now (probably under a different username). When I find it I'll post a link.

galvanized steel

I declined, but I have often wondered.........

artic snow splow offers there snow plows in this coating. seems like a lot of guys are loving it.

but as said by lots of others every coating has its weakness.

Ive thought about this as well. Ive seen many trucks fully coated, but if they go off road or what they use their truck for:dunno: I would like to do the wheel wells n up to the first body line all the way around.

Found the post. I was searching the 'Garage' but back in the day we only had the '73-91 K5' forum :doah:
Any way, here's the link but it's missing the pics, probably because I'm not a member and my album is down. Don't know

I'll have to find the pics of the doors and fenders after I finished wet sanding/polishing the orange peel out of them. Yeah, I hand sanded all the panels except the hood and tailgate. Ironically, the hood is the one piece that is rusted the worst. Guess that's because the water sits on it more easily than the vertical panels. I'll also take some pics of what it looks like today.

A friend of mine powdercoated a few cars about ten years back as a base coat and then applied paint over it. It looked good when he was done but he didn't leave it exposed.

I had one friend that did the interior and underside of his Jeep and it held up ok.

Most items that I have powdercoated black over the years, such as tire carriers, etc, have all faded much quicker than paint. Very durable stuff but gets an ashy color.

Also, you will probably end up with some warped panels with all the sandblasting.

Just go all the way, and bedliner the whole truck......

Actually I want to say its been done here before.......

Powder coat probably would look awful

For the life of me I can't find the pics of when I first had it coated. I searched 4 computers and even searched the deleted files - nothing. But here are some pics I took a couple days ago that should help you make up your mind if you'd like to do this too. The rest can be seen here:
