Power Steering—no assist

Hey Guys,

I just completed a power steering pump replacement on my '91 V3500 with the hyrdo boost system. After bleeding the air (not much came out—just some big bubbles) with the front up on jackstands, I fired the truck up and went to back it out of the garage, but had zero power-steering assist. Nothing. There are no funny noises, and according to my factory service manual, all the lines are running to their correct spots on the P/S pump (see pic 1.) Could I have somehow gotten these lines mixed-up? My other question is—on the backside of the pump there are two threaded holes where no lines run to. The instructions indicated to plug these holes with bolts . . . could I have used bolts that were too long and possibly be blocking fluid flow? (see pic 2.) Anyway, I'm kinda at a loss with this one, and any help would be much appreciated.

special blead out for hydro boost pump systems. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2894153&postcount=5

and always reuse the bolts/hardware from old pump like directions say to ( yes we as men dont read directions ) .

No dice on the bleeding . . . still doing the same thing. After changing the pump, it never made the "whining" noise they usually do when bleeding the air out. What it did do is suck fluid down in the reservoir when turning the wheel one way, then puke it out when turing the other way. Is there anyone who can look at pic #1 and verify that the lines are going to the correct tubes on the P/S pump? Could I have possibly gotten a bad NAPA pump? Resisting the urge to hit it with a big hammer right now is getting difficult.

check and note level not running.

fire up and recheck level.

if no change = no flow = bad pump.

you did use a pulley installer didnt you ? NOT a hammer or shop press.

Yep, I did use the pulley removed/installer. I'll check levels now.

No change in fluid level. Looks like I may have a bad pump—assuming the lines are in their correct positions—(and I think they are) so I'm taking it out tomorrow and getting a new one at NAPA. Think I may leave a little fluid in it for them . . .

oh come on now be nice drain it and swap over the plugs.

as a mechanic bad parts do happen from time to time. just got to deal with it.

atleast you wernt like a buddy years ago. swaped a 4.0 in a ford explorer . ran under 5min and locked solid. pulled back out droped pan found snapped off thrust flange on crank shaft. that was why no parts on front of engine . . . was in a hard front end hit and yard didnt tell him when thay delivered it. talk about PISSED OFF

Just wanted to update this post with a resolution. I swapped pumps at NAPA for another new one, got it installed this morning and it's working like it should. Been having bad luck with NAPA parts lately. Anyway, thanks for your help SweetK30. And yes, I did cool down and end up fully draining the pump before I brought it back. Even put the plugs back in too.

no problem buuddy .

and i shop around for the best quality parts at a lot of places to get the good stuff.

but no matter were you go there is bad reman parts.
