My box is tapped for 3/8" NPT. Some guys on here are getting away with 1/4", but a lot of people have complained that the 1/4" fitting reduces flow too much.
Mine is 3/8"NPT from box to a hose with male 3/8"NPT on both ends. Then a male 6 JIC fitting at the ram with a 90 deg swivel and a female NPT fitting on the other side. If you're ordering hoses off surplus center, the 48" ones will be way too long unless you have like 12" of lift.
Let me know if you want any more thorough info on the plumbing. I am not a plumber but the local store was very helpful with teaching me the nomenclature. I found it pretty confusing until they taught me how to ask them what I was asking for lol.
And honestly I think tapped caps are 10,000% better in this application than tapping the casting for three reasons.
It's easier and still very cheap
You can still use that box as a core and/or move your caps to a different box in minutes in the future.
you will never have tire clearance issues with the hoses on the front and top (this is the biggest reason).
In case you don't know, NPT is a tapered diameter and seals by wedging the fitting in to the threads. Don't run the tap in too far or the fitting will never get tight. Your fitting should still have several threads visible when it is snugged down. Also, if you're on a budget, harbor freight sells a 6 piece tap & die set that has 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" for like $10-$12. It's a killer deal and my taps have held up just fine, just remember to oil them when you're using them.
