Prerunner/expedition(safari) truck?

Sooo.... I googled "prerunner forum"....
The first thing that came up said, "prerunner info for rangers, taco's, Tundra's, Chevy's, etc." So, how is that not specific?

Where's the dead horse emoticon when you need it! Specific would be Blazer. General would be Rangers, taco's, Tundra's, Chevy's, etc. I one-upped you, I googled prerunner blazer forum. Got junk. :dunno:

May have to ditch the prerunner thought. Excessive custom modification directed only at speed. Maybe highly capable short expedition vehicle is a more accurate description of my goal?

I think you need to break down your goal a little more.

How many people and stuffe are going along, how much highway between here and where you're going, how long timewise are the expeditions, etc.

Where you located? I'm on the N side of DFW.

Hmmm. Most likely 2-4 people, a few rifle cases and a cooler for a 60 mile round trip day or overnight trip. The extreme would probably be 2 people, a few days supplies for a MOAB trail trip. Dunno if that would be a trailer or drive adventure. Neither with gas at $3.50! NE of dallas... Fannin county.

oh hell...i thought we were talking about a few thousand miles at a time...alone or with someone riding shotgun, communing with nature and surmounting isolated terrain......not a party
.

? Goal wouldn't be to win Baja, just to be confident in completing it without breakage, and still drive on the street without death wobble etc.

Sounds like all you need is a stock K5 with maybe a 1" body lift, traction aid in the rear diff, and some decent 31-33" tires. An exterior tire carrier would help free up space on the inside. Hitchhaul carriers help if you need a little extra space. I'd pack an air mattress and small tent for sleeping, you need to keep the rear seat if planning on seating more than 2.

Concentrate on replacing the stock stuff that goes out and strands you on side the road. Hoses, belts, wheel bearings, ignition components, etc. Keep fluids changed in your engine, tranny, and diff's so they don't go boom. You should be good to go.

That was going to be my reply.
I did that with my 73 for years, it came with the LS on 31" tires and all I did was just keep up with the maintenance and keep a few small spare items and tools with me.

Seems like you want to have a vehicle way more capable then what YOU want to use it for. We see lots of those in ca. Guys spend thousands of dollars on their rigs and they almost never see the dirt or if they do they never even approach their potential. Funny actually. For what you listed as your intentions of the vehicle thats about at what a stock or slightly modified K5 can do for you.

Wheel it 'til you break it has been suggested before. As long as it's trailered to wherever that's not bad advice.

Its funny I just now found this thread. I am slowly building this exact rig, a cross between pre-runner and expedition. Everything Ive done to my truck more or less has revolved around being able to take it off roading for days/weeks on end. This involves comfort and reliability along with off roading capacity. Its not easy. If you want to go decent with stock type suspension, get some deaver springs and bilstein shocks, this setup will run you close to 2k but suppose to be the best leaf spring pre-runner type setup you can get without going totally custom.

For expedition, you have to think "SELF SUSTAINED" This includes fuel, water, food, shelter, vehicle repairs, etc. First thing I did was move the spare tire outside, this freed up alot of space. Next was to remove the carpet and line X the interior.

Im sticking with 33s for now. I feel this gives me decent highway ride without killing gas mileage and it stills gives me some decent off roading capability. I may move up to 35s later on, but im still running on the 10b rear and front. But I did stuff them with some chromoly axles from strange and put a locker in the back and 4:10 gears. With the OD in the 700r on the hiway I run 1900rpm @ 65mph.

Expendition usually means stout bumpers, pre-runner usually means lightweight bumpers. So, youll have to come up with a compromise. Most expedition trucks are heavy, most pre runners are light. Just have to find the happy medium.

More later..............
