pretty sure my steering box is shot (leaks A LOT) got some ?\'s

I think i killed my steering box last night while muddin. it had already been leaking pretty good but now it will puke out all the fluid in a day. Would this be a seal or is this pretty much a blown box? Also, what years steering boxs can I use? LCM lists different boxes for 73-76 77-79 and 80-91. Am I pretty much stuck with the 73-76?

Also, anyone have one laying around that they want to sell me? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

hmmm, First off as for whether or not your stuck with the 73-76, I don't think so. I've seen a 76 box and I don't remember it being any different from the 77+. The reason they may list different ones could be the type of vibration dampner they use and how it attaches to the box and or steering column. I don't think it would be very hard to fit one on from a different year. you could always adapt another vib dampner or adapt the column to fit the box.
Now as to if your box is blown, well i'd say if it functions normally other than leaking real bad, it just the seals. I could be the seals on the box or the pump, my pump leaks directly on to the box appearing as if the box is leaking, but they work fine so i don't bother with it.
Hopes this helps

If there is a difference, it is not in the steering shaft.
The differences in steering shaft are that the 73-78 use a 48 spline 1" at the steering shaft/steering column junction. The 79-91 use a double D shaft.

If there is a difference, maybe it is in how the rag joint assembly bolts to the steering box?

Hope that helps a little.

From my understanding, the difference is in the PS hoses that attach to the box. I believe the fittings may be different, but I have never had two side by side to compare against.

Yeah, the fittings are what im most concerned about, I dont what to have to get new hoses also cuz I just relpaced those not too long ago

The fittings changed from a standard thread, plain to metric, w/ o-ring in '80.

OK, so can an old steering box be rebuilt and were would you buy replacement parts ?

Dan...

Ive been looking around and auto parts stores have rebuild kits for the boxes($60) but you would be better off probably getting one from someone off the board, Im going to try to replace a seal($8) in mine but if that doesnt work, ill just get one off of here for less than they sell the rebuild kits.

opfor2, where in the county are you located, im in ventura

Did you try the search button? I have made no less then 5 posts on how to replace the $11 worth of seals the box has. At work and don't have time to explain it for the 6th time.
