Price for gear install

Spoke to a local shop for installing gears. 4.88’s, master install kits, Detroit locker, power lock, and new carriers, installed is $5900. 10.5hrs for the rear axle and 9hrs for the front axle. $3000/axle seems really high. This was inland truck in Austin. Axles are Dana 60 and 14bff and have 3.73’s with open diffs. Thoughts before I pull the trigger?
 
That's including parts? Still stupid high

The rear you can do yourself if you're patient
 
Yes. $3000 in parts and $3000 in labor.

I’m debating just getting it regeared and then I can stick the lockers in later. I know the rear locker I can do myself easily.
 
WoW . :yikes: . That's crazy money . Rear is stupid easy to do . Best to learn on . Then do front .

Rear if open dont need carrier . Just get thick cut gears and the Detroit goes in a open carrier . Or get a good used open carrier if you need one .
 
Ok so I’m not totally crazy. I didn’t remember seeing needing a new carrier for the rear. I figured the front I would need one but not the rear.
 
I didnt change gears but the shop I used charged $500 parts and labor for new seals, bearings and shims for the rear. That included knurling a worn journal. If you do your own theres a pretty detailed explanation on pirate 4x4

The power lock is the carrier, and a master install set. Would be close to $1k in parts just there alone. Add 2 gear sets and install parts and detroit for the rear.
 
Are the axles in the truck? Are you just dropping bare housings off? The front axle should take longer then the rear axle on setup, I'd look around just based off that labor breakdown...
 
14 bolt is easy, only few special tools needed. might already be a gov loc. 6k is a lot I'm guessing the parts of full retail.
 
Agdieselers axle sounds like a good frickin deal now doesnt it? Lol

It should be 18 hours plus about 2600-3000 in parts with typical markup.
East coast gear supply has:
Master kits
Spicer front gears
Yukon rear gears
Powerlock and a Detroit
For 2100.

Something is not adding up and a legit quote would help us all laugh at it.

Im betting 4 wheel parts austin will be 4600.
I dont know any of the techs there anymore but they are usually the most expensive place in town!
 
Inland Truck is aimed more at commercial accounts, in my opinion. At least they are here. And I have found instances where the MHC Kenworth dealer has better pricing on things, so I suggest that you shop around, but I would agree that you can do it yourself.
As stated, the 14BFF is easy to set up, just heavy parts if you do it in the driveway on your back.

Even if you have to buy a tool or two, you will save money. There's lots of help on here!

I didn’t even think to call 4 wheel parts. I was expecting around 3-4k for everything. 6k just seemed like a screw off price.
 
I’ve watched videos and read manuals and this is not something I care to attempt by myself on the first round.
 
Never did my own . . Then 1 day I said screw it. As we all say 14ff is the easy one to learn on.

Another option is tear them down to the point all they need to do is hears and parts . Have a rollback tow it over n back and put it together again . Lots of your bill will be labor . Narrow that down to just gears and save .

But keep in mind, that you aren't by yourself with all of us around on here. The intimidation factor is up there on the first one, for sure. I say this knowing people who have done differential repairs in the driveway one night, and then drive 200 miles the next morning without knowing for sure that they had done it well.

It would be different if you had to drive this lots of miles daily and only had the weekend to get it done.
I definitely understand the hesitation, though I believe that you can handle it.
 
but do some reading on 4 wheel parts reputation over the years . i have read a lot of bad storys .

but yes thats much more inline .

and why pay for extra warranty if there setup right there good . if bad they self destruct fast .

and they quoted you a true trac . . . not a power lock posi . good units but 35" is the basic max size tire for them . there more a car / street truck unit . not ment for big axles & tires
