that **** can eat a big ole fat sack of day old baby dicks. Trying to send private messages when you are limited to 5 total, sent and received (wtf!)....AND when you can only send one very 10 minutes....****ing lame. /rant

ohh...uhh, im gonna use .030 mig wire for welding.

For years there were no pm's without a paid membership. :dunno:

This, although not ideal, would be better no?

Better? Nope. Not even alittle bit better. All or nothin. A total of 5 is a giant cock tease pain in the ass.

If someone wants to pay my membership, sweet. Otherwise, that **** is retarded. Rather have it back the old way.

I remember back about 15 years ago this wasn't a pay site. Went off a few years and come back and have the segregated memberships.

Back 15 years ago Steve Fox was running up his personal credit card paying for bandwidth we were all gobbling up...to the tune of $21K at one point. Had this site not gone to paid memberships, there wouldn't be a CK5.com today.

The memberships not only saved this site, it allowed the site to grow and become a lot more self sufficient. Bear one thing in mind, over the last 15 years, the yearly fee has never once been increased. Can you think of anything else that hasn't gone up in price since 2000?

It's a value IMO. If someone cannot afford it, or just chooses not to enjoy all the features here, they're still quite welcome. The info is still here, the community is still here. There are just some limits in place as incentives.

The way I see it, you choose to pay or not. It's a cost-benefit analysis. I figure I've gotten way more than $25 bucks worth of advice, time saved, etc.

My only "beef" with the PM feature is the 5000 word "limit"--as you guys know I'm not a man of few words....

It'd be nice if a little sign popped up when you typed the 5000th word in--instead of finding out when you try to "send" the message,it says "sorry sucker--go back and delete half your post "!......

It's tough to delete any of your message without it coming out sounding all weird..:doah:

I don't begrudge anyone from making money off of something they built. He built a community that I enjoy and get something out of. If he can make a buck while providing a service, more power to him. The market will decide just how much that service is worth. So far the market seems to say he's not overcharging.

I used to buy into the paid membership thing around here too, but I'm over that. I hear "but there is such a wealth of knowledge here that it's worth the member fee" bull, and just shake my head. I have more hobbies than just trucks and am a member of other forums to support those hobbies, there are many forums out there FULL of great info just like this site, and CK5 is the only one I've ever seen that charges a fee. ANd it doesn't matter anyway, you can google search and view any thread you want paid member or not. THe square body info is here for the taking, no matter who you are.

The garage and driveway are the only sections I'm interested in, the other sections I can read anyway for info, and they are much too slow to be worth posting in anyway, and the lounge..... well.... that's a place that is a can of worms and is just not my thing.

I completely agree with this. :thumb:

I sort of agree with this. There is a great amount of knowledge on here. Some great build threads too. However, I don't really need the site for tech knowledge. I don't really participate in the lounge either.

None the less, I still support the community. When my membership runs out, it's usually only a couple days before I renew it. I think the entertainment value I get out of it is worth more than the $25/year. I've spent more on worse things. I support this place so that others (new people) have a knowledge base to look on. This place has more of a family feel that you don't get elsewhere (cough, pirate, cough). And has a very diverse array of builds, mild, hardcore rock crawler, resto...

Pirate is like the wild-west, completely wild in there.

There are a lot of forums out there that use a ton of bandwith, This place has ad revenue, not sure why it would be so hard to make ends meet - that formula seems to work for most.. But I don't run a forum so I don't know.

I will gladly pay to not be bombed by ads.:D Every free site has to push adds to survive. Look at You tube, Google, Yahoo they all bomb bard you with ads to make money to provide their FREE service.:eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1:

I've never understood why folks think all web sites should be free. The host charges to owner, it takes personal time to manage the site, etc. Maybe it's because there's no tangible product to hold, doesn't matter though because when it gets this big it becomes a business. Why shouldn't Steve turn a profit? Begrudging him for turning a profit is like being pissed at McDonald's for charging you for a burger, should it be free just because you're hungry??

Nothing to get excited or sensitive about. I just don't see a reason to buy the membership, since basically nearly all similar type of forums do the same thing and don't have to charge anything. I don't care if Steve makes a profit or not, more power to him. You won't find a bigger capitalist than me.

FYI, I was stripped of my mod status years and years ago from no involvement with the forum for a few years because yes, I come and go here as my interest in GM fades or strengthens.

I try to stay way the heck away from coding. I had a problem with it many years ago, and its best if I don't do it anymore........

And even if I were still coding, I would have to look at the source code for this site to give a decent opinion.

Having said all that, I'm pretty sure that a word limit countdown setup is a "canned" function that might just plug in fairly easily.

I see it a lot on order sites, where you enter comments about your order, plus general comments on blogs.

When you start to type in a box, a small message pops up giving you a running countdown of how many words you have typed and how many you have left you can type.

Surprisingly enough, I have only hit the limit once in a PM. After that, I took care to not go over.
Of course, the fact that I do very few PMs might have something to do with it.

If one does not notice this, you might try PMing one of the mods with a suggestion.
They were kind enough to take up my suggestion about the strike through option, even though I am one of the few to use care about it

Where'd this even come from, and why is it in the garage? Cause the lounge moved?

Fahq, if someone doesn't wanna spend $25/yr the hell with 'em. I'm paying more for pizza right at this very moment on dominos.com.
