Project Blue Truck: '83 C20 - Rolling Chassis

The mail lady just dropped off my raw materials. Literally dropped it, it left a hole in my yard. 40 lbs of 4140 bar stock, 4.5" OD, 8.875" long. Thank you eBay. .308 and .22 LR for reference.

I'm not sure how long it will take my Harbor Freight band saw to chop this thing into 4 2" long pieces.

use plenty of lube...I like the fab stuff man! I'm envious!

I did, and thanks!

It only took about an hour for the bandsaw to make the cut.:doah: I just worked on cleaning up the shop while it cut, stopping by every 10 minutes or so to drip more oil into the kerf.

I centered drilled it and started facing it off but my lathe's drive belt finally gave up the ghost so that halted all forward progress.

Bummer because my counter bore is supposed to be here tomorrow.

My link material finally arrived: 2 x .25 DOM, some small I-beam (S3 x #5.7), and various 1/8 and 3/16 strips for reinforcement. The I-beam will be boxed in and sleeved; think desert truck trailing arm.

Just read through a lot of this thread and thinking DAYUUUUUM !!!!!!!!!!
K00L project and some even K00LER tooools to work it with.
Thanks for posting this up.

Thanks!

I got one of the drive flanges machined up and pressed together, all it needs is to be welded and then have the weld turned flush.

I picked back up with the faced off block and drilled it out to 1 5/8" to cut down on the amount of boring required.

Then I bored the hole to 2.374" and faced off the end that will mate to the hub. (no picture) Then it was back to the drill press to drill the bolt pattern.

Finding center

Making sure that the bolt holes were lined up correctly. I was nervous as I had never done anything quite like this before.

Pressing in the splined slug.

All that's left is welding the slug in.

Frostbite, damn. That is so completely bad ass that you are home building that type of complex stuff.

Thanks dude! It's definitely fun, but now I wish I had a bigger more powerful lathe so I could hog off more metal per pass.:haha:
