project blue whale *2wd to 4wd questions*

This should be a cool project, my brother is building a crewcab trail rig. Extreme though. drw 60 front, d70hd converted to rear-steer with d70 outers. tubular back half, 42s on h1 whls. full exocage

I want to run 42's so even the 4.56 may be too high. Also im trying to locate a nv4500 and a 6.5 turbo so gear choice isnt final untill i do some more figuring. This truck wont be extreme just a well built beater, at least i hope its well built.

That weld job looks like they just kept piling on rod until it looked smooth. Yeah the gearing is going to be the trick with getting this thing to run down the road without being at red line on the diesel.

Ok so i have the basic knowlage to convert this truck to 4X4 but i have a few questions. CROSSOVER STEERING i know i need the 2wd steering gearbox but is it good in its stock location? SPRING MOUNTS would the B-52's be ideal for this swap? AND finally does anyone make a front crossmember to replace the A-frame? or should i just fab one?

thanx BALZER

Box should be fine in stock location unless the axle is moved more then like 2.5" forward, in which case you would run into tierod-draglink clearence issues. An I would think you could use a crossmember like kurt at diy4x.com sells.

Sweet ill look at kerts page again i didnt notice it b4. Something tells me kert will be getting a bunch of business from me.

Well today I got all geared up to work on this beast. So i was going to take the back axle off and move it out of the way for the frame work. When I discovered the frame is broke just under the heater box on pass side. I also noticed that most the cab is rotted from the underside. More specificaly the body mount supports. Although both can be fixed, Im thinking it will be easier to build the red k20 diesel instead. I checked it out today and the body is in crappy shape, but the cab mounts and stuff is all solid and the frame is straight and no cracks. It already has the hydro-boost just need to swap in the engine from the crew cab. Then trans x-case axles and lift from the K5. So im not sure what to do the crew cab will be ALOT more work than i first thought. I may just build the red k20 for now and work on the crew till its done then swap it all back or just ghetto-fab the crew cab onto the k20 frame later. Tell me what ya think.
