Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

Very nice tread. I subscribed.
Coping some ideas for a 1983 4x4 Burb I am preparing for a trip to South America

Ok, Bumpers are on hold until February for now. Last Wednesday I got an offer for two axles for $400. a 12B and a 10B both with 4.10s and LSDs. I went down there on Saturday and ended up coming back with FOUR axles.

1) 12Bolt
1 10 bolt to match the 12 bolt
1 spare 10 bolt
and the prize, 1 14BFF all for $400.

I am going thru them today to find out exactly what I all I have.

The 12 bolt is confirmed with a LSD but instead fo 4.10s it has 4.56s. Frankly this is not a good sign for me. I was hoping the front was in fact a 4.10 but if these are matched sets (which I assume with all the chrome) then the front odds are is 4.56 as well.

Good job on the 4 axle deal. Don't worry about the 4.56 gears - just run a bigger tire to compensate :D

Are you planning using that 14bff?

So end result for the original two axles I went there for.

Was told
10b and 12b both with LSDs and 4.10s

ended up with
10b 4.56 open diff and 12b 4.56 LSD.

if'n it were me, I'd lose the 12b...as I understand it the 10bolt has a larger/stronger bearing design therefore is more desireable...some one with better knowledge can clarify it...

I would go with the 14bsf if I could get one cheap...plenty strong without losing the couple of inches clearance a 14b ff does

Sounds like you need bigger tires to match those gears

The 12bolt is now in the classifieds here and posted on craigslist. I had my choice between a SF or FF my choice so yeah I went for the FF.

I could probably go back with 200 bucks and clear him out of the other 3 10 bolts and the 14 SF
