Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

Dig those decals :waytogo:

.....Still not feeling the powder puff shade of blue though :dunno:

I read somewhere that you were at Expo this year... How did I miss ya? You got a picture of Lance's '70 Burb. I was camped by the showers/restroom/main entrance from Thurs to Sunday morning then moved over by Lance and Mosesburb for a while Sunday before we headed home. It would have been cool to met you. Next year! :waytogo:

Well with the door shells and the interior is blue it was not much of a choice. Would have added a lot of cost jamming and painting the door interiors. It's taking me just till about this week after painting the black on that I warmed up to it

Ah, we just missed each other. Mosesburb and I split right about 11 AM. I didn’t have my Burb, I had the K10 for this trip.

We camped here from Thur to Sunday AM

Then moved here for a while Sunday morning before Mosesburb and I went out on the Land Rover track to play

Congrats, you are the first to notice, or at least mention it. Anyways, a few reasons. It's only two inches higher but offers a bit more protection from the tire sandblasting it. But really the level I originally chose I could not get a good line around that under cut radius below the taillights so raised it to the bottom of the lights.

Really love your Suburban and your very informative thread! It's a great source of inspiration for me and my own exeditionesque plans. It's been stuck on the back-burner this summer, but now I think I just got the little kick in the backside needed to get going with it again :waytogo:

Looking forward to seeing your interior as well :)

Wow, I just realized I have not posted in a month. I've been busy with some other projects. We are finally cutting the material for the new bumpers this week. Those should be up and ready in a week. The wife and I will be getting back to upgrading the mule starting this week.

First up, actually start and finish wiring the lights on the roof rack.

Thanks Norgeek. By all means if you see any ideas for you build within mine go ahead and use them.

The interior is still being processed. I just picked up a router and router table specifically for this task.

Builds list for interior... (so far) Not including center council
6 sheets of plywood.
angle brackets
angle iron
1" Square metal tubing
64 skateboard bearings
Paddle latches
SS piano hinge
RV pump
Roto-molded tank
100% silicone
Power distribution center.
waterproof stain sealant

25' of hose

this, i'm looking forward to. i have a rough platform idea for my suburban but i have a feeling i'm going to learn a lot watching your build.

Geez Muddy, I dont know if am going to be able to live up to your expectations! JK

I am only doing what I feel is a good semi professional way to do things. I have screwed up on builds and projects enough in the past I intend to do this one right. That's why this build thread has come to a screeching halt. The next few projects on the Mule are massive and will suck money out of my wallet like nothing else if not careful.

thats kinda where i'm at, wanting to do it right. I've owned several junker off road rigs over the years, my suburban deserves to be done correctly. which leads me to several nights of lost sleep wondering if i'm making the right choices... anyway, i'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I check in on this from time to time. You continue to amaze me. Good job

Ok, after I get the lights all wired up on the roof rack the wife says we need to build the center console first because the cooler between us will set the depth for the rest of the work in the main cargo area. After thinking about that I agree.

the plans for the general design are still pretty much the same as I said in October last year before I start the bumper project.

From October:
"Up for this week. I am going to start planning to build a custom center console. This will go from the back side of the front seats in the most rearward position all the way to the front under the dash full width."

it will do, house or hold the following
Keep the lockable storage area
spot for 2 drinks
Tachometer
Tranny temp gauge
Vacuum gauge
2 spots reserved for future gauges
Cobra 29LTD BT CB Radio
Yaesu FT7900 Dual band HAM radio
1 dual flush mount USB ports
2 flush mount 12v adapter plug-ins
15ish Contura Rocker switches.
2 external mini speakers for the communications radios
It will also cover the power supply for the Laptop and will have 1000w power inverter.
mount and power for a iPad.
