G'day all, I am back after 9 years. I guess all my old posts are gone to I am starting over. Posted on the welcome thread and just thought I would share the projects that just got dug out after 9 years.

I have an 84 K5 that has been hiding in the trees in MN. We hauled it out there long ago and when off loading it the darn thing went feral on us and jumped the blocks, ran over a bunch of saplings, and is hiding in the tree claim.

Well, we started digging out years of stored parts and here is what we came up with so far. We have a new 6" lift for it along with ORD greaseable bushings, stabilzer quick disconnect, steering gear reinforcement, etc. We also dug out a 9 year old fresh 14 bolt with a new Detroit locker in it and disc brakes. It also has an old Poison Spider truss bar and rear cover. I don't think they make this stuff anymore.

For front differential I am in a bit of a quandry. I have an empty housing, used knuckles, and all the new stuff to put it together except for ring and pinion, install kit, and a carrier of some sort. Things have changed a bunch since I dropped out so I am trying to decided on which carrier to use. Detroit, Ox Locker, Yukon Zip, ARB, electric. I just don't know and would appreciate any input. I do have a 60 already done with a trac lock but I don't know if that would be sufficient.

The truck will be mainly used for snow and winter driving in ND. It will see some mud and maybe a bit of rock. I would really appreciate any advice.

For transfercase I purchased a new 205 for T400 back at the beginning. I also have a new T400 adaptor and a massive selection of T400, T475, and even a couple of 4l80e trans. I am a packrat.

Engine is built but might be too much. It is an old school BBC that began life as an LS7 drag car engine. It is fresh but is over 12 to 1. Might have to back that down a bit. I have other less overkill engines that we could use I guess.

Anyway, advice on the Dana would be greatly appreciated as would advice on bolting a 4l80e to a 205.

Thanks all,
ms

Welcome!

The 4l80 and the 205 were only offered in 3500 dually trucks for one or two years the adapter is hard to come by but they are out there. The additional electronics needed for the 4l80 are expensive. It really makes you wonder how much the overdrive is worth. I would probably just run the th400 if you're going to run that motor your fuel mileage will be bad anyway.

If you're going to overbuild just build up the dana 60 housing you have and swap it in when you're ready.

trac loc is AKA trash loc weaker unit . power loc is one you want.

there is a 4l80-e to 205 thread in garage section with tons of info .

usshift is the best bang for the buck on electronics setup to control the 4l80-e.

G'day, I have a parts truck that is a 91 2wd Suburban. It is actually far too clean to be a parts truck but it has a 4l80e and an injected 454. From what I understand the Advance Adaptors kit uses an adaptor stand that works with the 2wd 4l80e. Since my 84 truck actually has an 86 can that did have a computer, I thought that would be an ideal transplant to get that truck done. Use the computer, harness, and everything else to get the truck going.

For the Blazer project, I have another 2wd 4l80e and turbo 400 205 case. I thought about using the same adaptor and get a system to run the overdrive trans. The BBC used in the Blazer would probably be carbureted so wouldn't need a computer anyway.

What is the current preference for lockers for the front on a Dana 60. Here in ND we see a lot of snow and ice. I have used a trac lock before in a 60 and a GM posi in a corp 10 and didn't really care for either. They both torque steered to the short side axle and were a bit twitchy in snow.

Best,
ms

G'day all, I still haven't made a firm decision on the front locker but am leaning towards either an ox or an arb. I do have a chance to pick up a new never installed Detroit locker but I think the opinions I have seen on a selectable are steering me that way. And since the Detroit would be so hard to steer on ice and in snow I guess I made a bit of a funny.

I got a call today from a guy that is building a puller and he is interested in 1 of my extra dana 60 fronts. Better news is that his buddy wants my 84 K30 to drop a motor in and use as a puller. I guess if the money is right I probably should let it go.

Anyway, I have alloy axles, inner and outer 35 spline and the matching 35 spline lockouts. Shafts are assembled with Yukon joints and are ready to install. I can't find a couple of the parts I had such as the caliper brackets and I may give in and buy another set.

If I can figure out how to post pictures I will try to do so. Since my stoke in March I am kind of slow at the technical end of things so I will try. Found out the medication I was on that caused the stroke also caused heart damage. I have more tests in a couple of weeks to find out how extensive. Things will kind of slow down for now.

The good news is a friend of mine that does rock and mud is coming back to town and is going to pitch in and help me. Looking forward to that.

I read the thread on the 4l80e and I am leaning that way. My new 205 is the figure 8 style and I have a new adaptor for 400. I guess I will have to do a little more research on it.

We are pretty sure we will use the LS7 big block in the blazer. We will have to detune it some like switch from the mechanical roller cam to a hydraulic roller and go to big chamer heads to drop the compression. That should make it driveable anyway. And it should give it great MPG too. As the late Granville King said, "if mileage is that important, just lie."

Best,
ms
