Project "Second Life" The '78

Ill get ahold of the lepercon that i met a while back to see if he will give me some more to send out to you all LOL.

No little green men for me. I've got a gremlin loose inside the plant where I work and it has been making my life and job a complete hell the past few nights. Lol.

These are the parts I am looking at getting for the first round of spending on this truck. I changed the intake from the performer intake, to the RPM intake with oval ports.

Old idea for intake...

The guys at Edelbrock say that would add about 100hp putting it to 350 or so.

get a bigger cam than that. look at comp cam, they have way better designs than edelbrock. that edel cam is like a big towing cam that was copied from somebody else 20 years ago. other companies have newer and more modern ones. spend some time on the comp website, look at the operating rpm range to help you pick.

thats a nice truck!!! i think i would leave the bumpers painted white instead of getting chrome, but thats me, im antibling.

Please dont allow anyone to talk you into cutting that beauty up. I know you probably wont but that thing is in such good shape it would be almost criminal to screw it up with big tires and a huge lift. I'd keep the engine very mild too. 400 hp out of a big block is EASY so dont go wild with a bunch of aftermarket speed shop stuff. A nice cam, good exhaust, good carb and maybe a little bit of head work and you are at the power levels you want.

Thanks for the advice, and you are right, i will not be chopping up this beauty, they are getting more and more few and far inbetween, at least where i am living.

I have these brake lights that the origonal owner added at some point in the trucks past life. I want to take them off, the holes underneith are not that bad and can be filled, but as far as the silicon sealer he put around the edges to keep water out, how would i go about removing that with out hurting the paint?...that was a long run on sentence

Also, i need to get some opinons and advice, should i get rid of all the wiring, old trailor brake harware which is on the driverside wheel well, that i dont need or wont use again, i am thinking of cutting off the old welded on hitch when i get my new non step rear bumper and new front bumper.

So should i clean up the engin bay, and maybe rust bullet black a lot of it?

Also I am not sure what the large fuses are on the firewall, if someone wanted to shine some light on that for me that would be great!

Leave the firewall body color, it's visual proof it's original paint and color. Get rid of the trailer wiring. No idea on the big fuses, I'd trace the wires and see where they go...

So any ideas of the best way to get the dirty clear silicon off the most efficent way?

giant eraser. i have one that fits in my drill. got it at napa. its about 5" around, and will take that junk right off without harming the paint. they have a special name for them, but a good parts guy will know what ya want if you tell him a giant eraser.

Its the same thing used to remove the gunk left on when you take off the trim on 80's pickups and k5's. It looks like a big yellowish.... well eraser. Similar material too.

3M eraser wheel, they attach to a drill and wallah.

Here is a demonstration to see how it works.

The 454 engine that I have, is causing me to ask this question, I am hearing a knocking noise, it does not seem to be coming from the engine but the belts and pullies up front more, but it is hard to tell where for sure. It is pretty loud when i first start it up when it cold, but after it runs for 5-10 mins is quiets down and you can hardly hear it.

So what could be causing this annoying noise?

I took off the old man style running boards, and the hard plastic mud flaps.

The mirrors have been sand blasted and repainted white.

I took off the old bent down white step bumper and I am going to order a chrome non step bumper, which will end up being higher so I can't mount my exhaust until the bumper comes.

could possibly be piston slap. Not good but not bad, just an indicator of possible worn pistons or liners.
