Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Anyone who has done this swap (700r4 to Sm465) with the hoist method.

Do you have any pointers on anchor points to drop this out as one unit ie., trans, tc and cross member and also any anchor pointers for hoisting the new unit back in?

Easier to do without the t-case hanging off the trans for coming out and going in.

But it really depends on what you are using to do the heavy lifting. A floor transmission jack? Regular floor jack? Cherry picker through the door and the trans hump removed?

that’s why I said with the hoist method. Meaning hoist through the door. I’m just not sure where to strap the chain on. Would like to drop it as a single unit onto a low profile dolly and just roll it out.

I might even be able to drop it out onto the legs of my hoist and roll it out.

Pulled the transfer case since I was right there. I was expecting it to be a lot harder to get out.

My buddy is bringing a tranny jack tomorrow so should be a piece of cake in-and-out with the Tcase off. I just man handled it out, the Tcase. Glad I didn’t break my face but it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I thought the output shaft of the tranny would reach a little longer making it harder. Piece of cake.

I may have done something similar, minus the tumble onto the creeper part..

:doah:

As long as you you got it done, good deal!

Definitely going to have to hoist the sm465. Truck is too tall and I think I would soil myself

Since the blocks of wood prevented me from pulling the trans out I was scratching my head on how to safely get it off the jack while underneath the truck. I undid the strap and just slowly lifted the boards until it slid right on to the creeper. Looks like it was tumbled harder than it actually was. Worked out super nice.

Anyone know where I can find a picture of the linkage set up for the mechanical clutch? Trying to figure out where to run the springs and such. Then I’m putting the tranny in. 64F4FEBA-E5E6-42D7-9C88-EC63DCEFFBA6.jpeg

Kinda chatty pictures. Had to shovel cloud poop to get that close...

I stuck it in that oblong hole in the frame

Might not be where it should go, but that's where it was when I got the truck in 96
:dunno:
