Properly Removing AC ( I don't want a hole in the sky above me)

What should I do with my R-12 AC if I swap my cam?

I know its illegal, but 90% of the junkyards here just cut the hoses,or stab the condensor with the forks and say "WHOOPS!".... ...and their defense is usually something like "well, they shoulda smashed it up hardrer, so the freon would have spilled in the street!--they dont get fined if THEY have an accident..so why should I?"....
I'm not trying to throw flames. What happened to personal responsibility? Because the other guy does it and gets away with it doesn't make it right. The biggest difference with the example is intent. There was no intent to crash the car (or there shouldn't have been).

Pay to have it removed and have no regrets or second thoughts.

It will be a real PITA, but you may be able to do the job without removing the AC. I also sent you a PM regarding some of the AC parts if you pull it.

well... OJ got away with murder... i'll be right back, i need to go kill an ex-girlfriend. nice logic bob.

not saying its OK...

I never intended to say its OK to do it!..I merely stated most places DONT BOTHER to follow the laws, and feel its just another way to milk money out of hard working garage mechanics..

Yes,if it were a perfect world, everything would be fair, and everyone would be treated equally..but as you noted, those with money and power (like OJ) don't have to follow the rules like the rest of us..

I wonder how much freon gets released "accidentally" in the USA in traffic accidents daily...versus how much us backyard mechanics release "on purpose"...in my experience, most older vehicles had A/C that didn't work anyway, because most of it leaked out already through bad "O" rings and compressor seals, and not much was "lost"when we opened it up....

Meanwhile, some third world country is releasing nerve gas,but nobody cares..

u can do a cam without breaking open your ac
just pull the condensor up out of the way

I could go both ways on this...if the government doesn't want you to dump trash or release pollutants, then they should provide a cheap alternative to doing exactly what is being talking about for those that can't afford the "right thing". Yes, compared to everything else dumped in the world, it's a drop in the bucket. Taken one instance at a time, EVERYTHING is a drop in the bucket.

Anyways, this guy probably thought the same thing. I'd hate to have ended up in his shoes:

I know it's the law but it's a stupid law b/c it's nothing more than EPA idiots doing busywork so they will have a job. The EPA should be done away with right after the IRS. Just let the gas out man.

I know I'm horrible. AND to add insult to injury I still have a two stroke ouboard!

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances must be certified by November 14, 1994.
Failure to comply can cost you and/or your company as much as $27,500 per day, per violation.
EPA also offers a reward up to $10,000 to a person providing information concerning violations of the act.

I am a HVAC/R Tech. Freon is gold, find a tech who works on the side and he will do it for free if he can keep the R-12.

Dump it in the air, real good advice everyone, why not dump the used oil behind the garage while you are at it. "China does it" another good cop out. Think some people should grow up and take responsibilities for their actions IMO.

If you ever see anyone dumping any type of refrigerant in the air call the EPA, they do pay out the 10,000 reward:D , and that is per violation, you see someone dump from 3 A/C units it is 30,000 dollars. (IRS taxes it real hard though):eek1:

Sorry I sound like a @sshole, just a pet peeve of mine.

DANG, I guess I'll just see if I can find somebody to do it for the R-12 if I indeed take my AC out. I don't have a spare $30,000 to be paying. :o

It is a 10,000 dollar reward for the person that turns you in, then you get fined. The EPA is authorized to assess fines of up to $25,000-27,500 per day per violation of the Act. That was a few years I might be even more now.

sheesh, i guess i had better quit farting then, because methane gas is also bad for the air and o-zone layer:rolleyes: WHICH btw, is also released from the EARTH under the oceans,,,hmmm we are destined to DIE!! we are killing the earth !!! OOOOH NOOO !!!

the way i feel about it is it's only a law for the revenue, there are alot more gasses and chemicals out there that are far worse than r-12.

:D :haha: :D

actually, the production of R134a is supposedly worse for the environment than the release of R12.
