ps question

awesome thanks guys. at this point im wondering if it would be less of a hastle to just swap the pump. well anyone have a 84 2wd box they want to trade for a o-ring style?
So you have the earlier one?
At this point I don't think I am going to need a 2wd on my 76.
If my plans change I will let you know, I do have an 88 so if I end up not needing it I will let you know.

i dont know what year box i have but i do know it wond fit a 84. there are o-rings on the inlet holes if that helps determine the year

The year break was mid year 1980 and earlier (1st design) for flare fitting, and mid year 1980 and later (2nd design) for O-ring fitting. It doesn't matter if 2wd or 4wd the break is the same. IF you can remove the flare seats from your old box you can insert them into the O-ring box to convert it to flare fitting.

the holes in the old box (84) is a little deeper than this 2wd box i have. so it seems like i would need to pull the fittings out of the 2wd box. the old hoses are to deep and the new box is to shallow.... make since? so could i try to pull the seats out of the newer box? do they even come out at all?

If you look at both of the steering boxes you'll notice that the casting number is the same (7802644) BUT the O-ring fitting box has an L at the end. If you remove the fittings from the flare fitting box that box would theoretically now be a 7802644L. Yes the fitting do come out but i'm not sure if you can successfully get them out without damaging them.

Or you could just swap the sector shaft between the 2wd and 4wd boxes.
It's really pretty easy.

anyone have a pic of such swap? anf could i do it with the box still mounted? i got the new box on and its a PITA to get on by myself

It could be done on the rig BUT there is a critical adjustment that needs to be done after the sector shaft is swapped and it is ALOT easier to do with the box off the rig, besides the steering shaft and the draglink need to be removed anyhow to make the adjustment.

You should set-up a time to drive out here to Fremont with both of your boxes and enough cash to cover a dinner and we'll Get-r-done. :thumb:

What day do you have off? I'm usually available after 4:30 in the afternoon and on the weekends assuming we don't have any plans.

sunday only and i have a prego wife so sundays are HER days, no arguments

LOL, I have a prego wife here also (due July 29th). So if you can't slip out on a sunday what time are you off on saturdays? You just need to explain that one of the "brothers" is offering to help you and you'd like the help.

il talk to her about it. i get off around 4:30. i will find a day to make the trip, and il bring the beer... if you drink. are you having a girl or a boy? were having a girl due Aug. 25th

I don't drink, alcohol that is. :D

We're having another boy.

i was talking to a guy today that was telling me that they make adapters to go from a flange style line to a o-ring style internal. anyone know of such adapters and where i can get one if at all?

No such thing that i'm aware of. People do swap out the rear fitting to go from one to the other style hose but that won't help you on the steering box side if those need to be different.
