Put your Blazer on a diet

I was sneaky. I made the holes in the body mounts a little longer and pulled it as far as it would go. I then used 1/2" rod to support it to the firewall and pulled it back as far as I could ans still fit the electric fans before the motor. Worked out well.

A good compromise in performance vs. weight might be coiling the front and leaving the rear alone but the pounds gained are well worth it either way.

How many pounds do you think it is about? Leaf springs are pretty heavy but uses less parts. 20 pounds, 40? I too think that the traction control gained is well worht the weight gain.

Might be hard to remember on how long this thread is. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm going on a run this weekend, I'm going to try to getmine across the scales to see where I'm at and see if the body cutting and skinning has really been worth it.

very true, I'd say this is one of the longer threads around here thats about actual tech haha. Winch rope as far as I look at it, yep got the weight loss, and comp rigs its require(Neuroc anyway) so I'd run it, even though I doubt my K5 will ever be a comp rig. The next buggy I want to build as a trail rig i can run in Neuroc.

Not to mention that the rope won't cut ya in half if/when if breaks... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, no kidding.

I went to the winch rope but that was before I was thinking about weight of the vehicle. Worked out anyway. I think the rop is lighter then the hook on the end.

another one not covered worth a few lbs, Synthetic winch lines.

I mentioned this waaaay back /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I might look into getting some eventually, but how hard is it to cut the rope against rocks or trees? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

when it happens it is too late to ask. If you overload it(can easily happen unintentionally) and have it scraping along rocks for long enough you are bound to weaken it. Rope will leave some nasty welts but that wire is gonna cut you into shreds.

The rope comes with a wear sleeve on it for running it over rocks and such.
Remember that in some pulling situations the rop stays fixed and the vehicle moves. In these situations, if the rope is not going to move around on what it is touching it is okay.
The nice thing with the rope is that it can be very easily feild spliced. I can't explain how to do it but it can be done with random things you have in the truck already.

You mean McDonald's wrappers, motor oil, a traffic cone and duct tape?

Well, that's random stuff *I* have the truck already /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

let me guess, cone for when you have your ass under the truck on the side of the road, tape to patch the whole in your oil pan, oil to refill her after she pissed her fluids down the road, and mcdonalds to fill you back up after you cursed all your energy out?

Nah, she actually keeps all the fluids except power steering, which she leaks like a sieve.

The duct tape is god's gift to mankind in general, and is especially helpful for the bikini top... the traffic cone *I* didn't put there, so I've no idea how it got there... and the motor oil is on its way home to be stored in the garage /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Oh, and Chez Ronald wrappers are from breakfasts, where the guy in the drivethrough looks at me funny for having no doors.

Oooh okay I see. It sounds alot better than wire in some ways like the mass, and if it breaks it won't dice you up. The only bad thing I can think of is price? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

oh yeah I forgot about the fairlead part... if only money grew on trees, or k5 parts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm running mine with a roller fairlead. I need to change it but its been four years. My steel cable didnt last that long.

Is the rope showing any sign of wear from the ROLLER FAIRLEAD? Or just usual wear and tear after 4 years?

Its looks pretty good. Its lost most of its origianl color and looks pretty fuzy right now but I understand thats normal for them.

I'd buy another one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
