I have the chance to buy the axles out of a CUCV. The guy wants $1600 for the pair. I really want to switch to 4.56 gears eventually anyway so this seems like exactly what I am looking for.

However, if I buy the axles, I need to buy rims and tires as well, and I just spent about 1k on new tires last fall. The axles I have now are probably fine for anything I'm going to use the truck for in the near term so I'm not in a hurry.

So what I'm really asking I guess is, in Utah, how good of a deal is this, and how rare is it for these CUCV axles to come up for sale? Is this a deal I should jump on even if I need to let the axles sit for awhile, or is this a fairly common deal that I can get again when I'm more ready?

I'm not in Utah but in the southeast $1600 is not a great deal for axles that will still need freshening up. Around here given some time to shop you could find a similar pair for $1000.

$1600 is a good deal IMO, if you can use the 4.56's.

Normal civilian 1 tons almost always had 3.73 or 4.10 gears, so you'd be in for re-gearing both axles ($$) plus the 14 bolt rear has a Detroit locker in it.

Around here, a matching set of civilian SRW 1 ton GM axles is worth $1000-1200, throw in the Detroit and you're close to your $1600 price. If you didn't want the 4.56's, they probably wouldn't be worth it. But if you want the 4.56's, do it, WAY cheaper than paying for gears, bearings, and someone to install them.

I guess the question becomes how rare of a find is this? If I can wait until next year to do the swap ( I can), am I likely to find a CUCV parting out again then?

fyi that tie rod is bent up and will need replaced. so there goes a few bucks off the price he wants .

supply and demand in the area your in . here in the east little high if you ask me.

upside to these axles is bigger brakes. makes stopping big tires a breaze. if you can i would score the hydroboost assembly / hoses and pump / master so you have a matched setup.

also dont forget the top leaf spring plates for the front.

you need to toss in as much as possible to help in the swap or roll around dutys ( tires/rims ) and any extra parts you will want later on .

I just went thru shopping around for 1 ton axles and you can find a 14 bolt for less than $200. The Dana 60 goes for around $800 for a single wheel axle. I'd offer him no more than $1000 for the set. But word of advice, take the springs with the axles if the owner is willing. Saves you from searching around for longer springs later on. Also use searchtempest.com and find some remote locations around your area. I did about a 2 hour drive for each of my axles, but saved a lot of money by doing so and found exactly what I was looking for.

4.56 are rare in anything but cucvs. Price seems reasonable.

Generally that seems about right, but these are axles with 4.56 gears in them (which I want) and a locker already in the rear. I think $450 or so for the rear at least and $1k for the front just going off of what I've been seeing around here. So the price doesn't seem too far off for my area and frankly I'm willing to spend a couple bucks more if I don't have to regear it.

What I'm really wondering though is if I can get this later. I'm hoping some more Utah guys will jump in and let me know how often they see these come up for sale.

I already have 6" lift springs on my truck now. I should still be able to use them with the d60 right? :dunno:

I'll check that out, thanks.

if you can get him to $1400-1500, than its a deal. at 1600 its a good solid price, especially if you want 4.56s. you could not buy normal axles and get them to that point for that price. especially without starting at DRW. i'd say if you have the money, its a good idea to buy them and work on sprucing them up until you feel like popping them in.

^^This. Good advise here. I have CUCV 1 tons in my K5 (4.56's with detroit in the rear). They are bad a$$. I say start pimping him out and see how low you can get him (start looking at the imperfections like the bent tie rod and use that as leverage to push the price down), then when it is as low as you think you can get him, go for it.

other thing is, don't necessarily wait to long because I guarantee you aren't the only wheeler in Utah looking for one tons.
I've seen the cucv setups go for 2k out here just because wheelers know what the demand wheeler is so they price accordingly, and they get it.

unfortunately the guy had 3 other rock buggies sitting in his shop in various states of rebuilding. He knew exactly what he had so his price was firm.

I decided, reluctantly, to turn it down. I think the price was good, but not "can't pass it up" good. I have bigger fish to fry atm, and there is no way I'm getting my money back out of the tires I just bought, so I'll just hope that I can find a similar deal in the next year or so.

Those 4.56 CUCV axles do seem to pop up around here (utah) fairly often. Every couple of months a pair seem to pop up either on KSL or RME. And they are almost always avaliable up in Ogden thru Boyce Equipment. Another place that usually has them would be Ventures Truck parts, also in Ogden. Another pair will pop up, keep watching.

Have either of you ever priced a pair from Boyce??? If so then you'd realize the cost difference here makes this a very good deal?

Have you checked out Boyce Equipment in Ogden? they are 4.56 gears, detroit in rear and a posi in front. they are new or rebuilt.

fyi on cucv 60 front posi units. there light duty trac - loc AKA trash loc weak units.

the good posi in a dana is a power - loc . and stupid easy to reman and are as close to a locker as you can get with out a locker.

Yeah Boyce dont let them go for cheap, but you do get a soild, ready to use axle that wont need rebuilding. Buy a beat set of axles, rebuild them and Boyces prices arnt far off. I personally got a 60 & 14 for 600 and have put well over 2k into them getting them up to par. It's real easy to spend money on 1 tons fast.

So yeah its a good deal IF 1600 gets you a set of axles in great shape that are ready to run...

And again, yeah those axles pop up around here every few months for around that price. There are a few local members on here that have them up for sale every so often from parting CUCV's and such.

Its because of Boyce the price is that high.

Boyce will buy a 60 from you in just about any shape for a grand. So the front axle is worth just that 14 bolt like that adds the next 600.

You can find em cheaper not everyone knows boyce will buy em. They come up its certainly not a unicorn or anything like that.
