Question about TBI and Trans

I have a 88 Blazer with TBI and 700R4. Today going down the highway, (70 MPH). The motor died, I put it in neutral tried to restart, didn't crank. So while slowing down, it started smoking. Figured out the smoking was trans fluid coming from on top of the trans. I don't know if I busted the trans or maybe it came out of a vent? Any ideas?

Also the injectors aren't getting any gas. I have half of a tank. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the fuel pump and relays? I can't find a fuse for it. Does someone know where it will be? Has anyone had this happen to them?

Thanks in advance for any help.

There is a fuel pump relay on the fire wall above the passenger's side valve cover. If you don't hear the fuel pump cycle when you turn the key to the on position, chances are that the fuel pump is dead. You may want to check your ground on the top of the tank.

As for the trans, it may have been pumping fluid out of the vent since it was rolling in gear without the engine running. Ask Tony Ballard!!

I know Tony. I am going to his shop Tuesday, if I have the fuel pump fixed. Hopefully thats what it was. Thats why its good to have friends like Tony! It hasn't been long since the pump was replaced, not saying that it isn't bad. I can't hear it running when turning the key on, so it might be. I just haven't known one for just dying going down the road with no warning at all. I know where the relay is, just wondering what wires to test for voltage.

I am from Natchez and used to work for Tony. I would take a test light and get someone to cycle the ignition switch. Even if the relay is bad, the oil pressure switch should activate the fuel pump once oil pressure is built up by the starter . If you are getting fire to the pump, the pump is bad. These pumps are s**t. As far as I know, there is no fuse for the fuel pump.

I have never had a problem with a fuel pump dying while driving either. It is usually a nice surprise when I am late for work.

It is just got me, It's been running fine, I went to Hattisburg this morning, and got back to Adams county, it just died, going about 70 or so on 84. Now no fuel at injectors, showing half a tank. which i believe is right. (filled up in H-burg) Can't hear pump running.

If you were out of gas, you would still hear the pump. I would check all of the wiring including the ground. Talk to Tony abouth the trans, but I don't think it is a problem. If it is, I would be surprised if they are related.

I don't think they are related. I was worried about rolling 70 MPH and motor dying, I coasted about 1/2 mile before pulling over. I don't see a ground coming undone on smooth highway, but could be wrong. I'll check everything tomorrow.

The fuel pump is fused.
It is the 10 amp fuse in the lower left corner on the fuse box marked ECM B
Check it if it is blown. If it is there is a short somewhere or the pump is bad.

About the relay on the firewall:
There is a red lead coming out of it that is not plugged in to anything. Run 12V from your battery to that lead the pump should run.
One more thing to check.
If you do hear the pump running:
A bad distributor module will cause the fuel injectors NOT to fire. They can die suddenly like what happend to you.

I checked the fuse, it isn't blown. Also hooked the red wire up to the battery. No pump running, so I'm going to drop the tank.

You have several things going on all at once which leads me to believe you have a related problem. The fact that the engine won't crank, the fuel pump doesn't run and no injector spray (obvious if the pump don't run) you may have an ignition switch problem. Tell us what happens when you turn the key to run, do you get dash lights, radio?

Everything works. I got 12 volts at the pump, but pump won't run. I got the tank out, new pump ready to go in, but I broke one of the bolts of the strap for the tank. Just got it fixed, so I will start on it in the morning. If I'm not getting toren up with a hurricane.

The engine wouldn't crank, because of no fuel. I have drove it around. It is doing fne. I guess the trans fluid, was just going that fast and it blew it out the vent.

Cranking and not firing are two different things that have two different problems. When a person says it won't crank, that means that the starter will not "crank" the engine over. :deal:
