Question on gearing with a SM465

OK a new turn a friend of mine said he found 4.10 60 and 14b that i could get for a ok price. now my question is with 4.10s could i pull off a 38-40" tire and be ok with it? thanks

It should be OK. I have 4.10s with 37s and it turns about 2800 in 1:1 and Torque converter locked (I have a 700R4:o ). It is kinda a dog until it gets up though:doah: . If you are going 38-40 why not get the cheap axles that are 4.56? Maybe get the 60/14 combo and regear them to 4.56?

Ira

i have 4.10's and 39.5's and on the freeway in 3rd gear its 2500 rpms going 65-70 (dont have a speedo) In o.d. its 2000 (lockup conv. not hooked up yet). Im not even driving mine on the street or hooking up my lockup convertor swithch until i have 5.13's to help the high range out.

the cheap axles are only redone 10b. I was thinking 35" maxx for them to keep the 10b happy, but now that this came my way not sure what to do. I guess i could get them and regear down the road. Not sure what to think

i just swapped in a 465 into my k5 last winter. with 33's i'm about 2,100 rpm at 65 mph i love it. it will do 75 mph in second (at 5,000 rpm need reason to replace motor) and it's a blast to smoke those rice burners at the light with a lifted k5. never checked my gears though just got lucky.

my truck came factory with a 465 and 4.56's and I think what 31" tires?
so I put 33's on it and was great.. considering gas was $.74 a gallon it wasnt a big deal.... I never had a problem with bad fuel mileage.. I think with my 350 I was pulling 14mpg average and I blew that motor up (pulling someone out of a mudhole and over tached at about 6500rpms on a 465k+ motor :haha:

anyway.. i put a 305 in and boy did my mileage drop... down to 10mpg... motor didnt have enough stout to push the truck around....

so now im running 40" hawgs measuring 38.8" on 16.5x12 rims (to pass nj laws) and I think 4.56's are bare minimum for this size tire....
I added vortec heads, comp cams xtreme 4x4 cam (smallest) with .454" lift, vortec dual plane intake, holley truck avenger, headers and now my truck moves ok....

Is that still on the 305?

For a small block rig, 4.10 with 35's is probably about perfect for an all around rig w/o OD. If you're towing, then 4.10/ 33's or 4.56/ 35's would probably work better, especially if you've got a lot of weight to lug around. 4.56's and 37's would work well together too. My rig runs well around 60-70, for an area that has a lot of 55MPH zones it would work well, but out here, 75 is about as slow as people go. I don't really want to run more than 3K RPM on the highway, and with 33's that's just under 70 MPH. I think you'd be ok with 4.10's and 37's- provided your engine produces a fair amount of torque.

hell no.. wouldnt waste that kind of money on a 305!!! the 305 was out of a 1977 monte.... now I have a 1991 caprice 350 police motor...sounds cool but sucked in my truck...

The 465 lets you run any axle ratio you want :D

So far I've tried 3.21, and 4.10 with 33's, and 3.73 and 4.57 with 31's. I prefer the taller ratios. One friend of mine just went from 4.10 to 3.73 (33's & 465) and is happier.

Where's that Iceman guy.... 3.08s and 35's I think he runs. ;)

thanks bowtiepower, i dont know about 37s and 10 bolts. i think i would break them.
