What is the perfect gear ratio for a daily driver? I have a 350/700R with 33/12.50.15 89 jimmy

I'd hedge my bets and go with 4.56's to be honest. Very few people go with smaller tires later, and with 4.56's your engine would be turning at 2100 rpm at 65 mph which is more than fine. Those gears would allow you to go up to about a 36" tire without having to re-gear (again) if and when you go with a bigger tire.

how fast do you plan on going haha

373s would be a little high for me, its just preference though. i had 373s and 33s BUT also had a 305, didnt have the power i was used to in my blazer.

My 89 blazer came stock with 31" tires and 3.73 gears and it was perfect. I did not however measure the actual tire height so i can't say how much smaller the tires were over the stated size.

Too tall...you'll kill that 700R-4.

Right now im running stock 3.42s . Can and will this make the trans run hot? I just bought the jimmy about 3mo ago lifted it and wheels and tires and just now started driving it. Having shifting problems after it worms up shifts hard when cold . The guy i bought it from said the tranny was just built about 1500 mi ago.

Rwong.....I run that identical truck...89 Jimmy, 3:73, 290hp roller, built 700r, etc...I've run it that way 13 years ...towed a boat, etc, ...I get 16 hwy, and decent road manners....no rocks in Texas...I got enough wheel speed to manage mud to the limit of my lift and BFG Muds. My truck is a moderately built all around driver...I don't need or desire 14Bff, but I have a 14SF from a van in my shop ready to build if I ever break my 12B, Auburn Pro, 1340H moser, Yukon....which matches my Yukon, Auburn Pro, ORD 4340 front....

I'd say for mileage and all around, 3:73 is a great choice...4:10's would work also but I'd guess the mileage would suffer by a mile or 3....

Just my experience....I road trip to Nascar races and tow my bass boat 300 miles one way regularly without incident...

Well, it's gonna lug a lot, and spend a lot of time 'hunting'. Hunting is when it can't seem to find a gear that makes it happy, and/or can't decide if the TC wants to lock up or not. This sort of thing does create a lot more heat, and heat is definitely the enemy.

700R-4's definitely live longer and happier lives in front of deeply geared diff's. I would definitely gear deeper than you think you might need to.

To be honest even 4.88's would not be out of the question. With 4.88's your freeway rpm would be about 2250 rpm at 65 mph...again well within the ideal range for a smallblock.

In the meantime I recomend only using OD for highway until you do get it re-geared. A tranny temp guage is also a good idea, as is a big stacked plate tranny cooler.

Definitely the exception, rather than the rule...

Thats my next buy is a trans cooler and a temp guage so i can see what its doing.

Maybe my experience can help. I had driven my K10 about 10 years with a 350 engine, 700R-4 trans, 33 x 12.50-15 tires and 3.73 gears. I pulled a boat frequently and a did lot of 4 wheeling.

Bottom line: 3.73 is too tall for 33" tires. Get 4.10 gears for 33's. Get 4.56 if you think you may move up to 35's.

I put 4.88's in the dana 60 & 14 bolt with 35 inch tires for now. 37's soon. Much better. Overdrive is a wonderfull thing.

4.10 would be alright.4.56 would be better if you ever plan on bigger tires.with overdrive 4.56 would be fine even with 33 inch tires.stock was 31 or so tires and on the truck.up to a true 33 4.10 would work to get you closer to stock gearing, but with the heavier rolling resistance of the bigger tires,4.56 would give you a lil more torque at the wheels.

This is my plans for the truck drive every day to work and back freeway pull my ski boat, fishing boat, ect so i need a gear that works best. thanks to all for the suggestions please keep them coming. I dont plan for bigger tires .

good to know you've made up your mind, are u regearing or just swapping in some 3/4 ton axles with 4.10s in em?

fyi- i have 35s and 4.56s, if i were to do it over again i would have went 4.88s or maybe 5.13s, but this isnt a dd either.
