What is the perfect gear ratio for a daily driver? I have a 350/700R with 33/12.50.15 89 jimmy
What do u think about 3.73?
Right now im running stock 3.42s . Can and will this make the trans run hot? I just bought the jimmy about 3mo ago lifted it and wheels and tires and just now started driving it. Having shifting problems after it worms up shifts hard when cold . The guy i bought it from said the tranny was just built about 1500 mi ago.Too tall...you'll kill that 700R-4.

Rwong.....I run that identical truck...89 Jimmy, 3:73, 290hp roller, built 700r, etc...I've run it that way 13 years ...towed a boat, etc, ...I get 16 hwy, and decent road manners....no rocks in Texas...I got enough wheel speed to manage mud to the limit of my lift and BFG Muds. My truck is a moderately built all around driver...I don't need or desire 14Bff, but I have a 14SF from a van in my shop ready to build if I ever break my 12B, Auburn Pro, 1340H moser, Yukon....which matches my Yukon, Auburn Pro, ORD 4340 front....Too tall...you'll kill that 700R-4.

I'd say for mileage and all around, 3:73 is a great choice...4:10's would work also but I'd guess the mileage would suffer by a mile or 3....
Just my experience....I road trip to Nascar races and tow my bass boat 300 miles one way regularly without incident...
Thats my next buy is a trans cooler and a temp guage so i can see what its doing.Well, it's gonna lug a lot, and spend a lot of time 'hunting'. Hunting is when it can't seem to find a gear that makes it happy, and/or can't decide if the TC wants to lock up or not. This sort of thing does create a lot more heat, and heat is definitely the enemy.
700R-4's definitely live longer and happier lives in front of deeply geared diff's. I would definitely gear deeper than you think you might need to.
To be honest even 4.88's would not be out of the question. With 4.88's your freeway rpm would be about 2250 rpm at 65 mph...again well within the ideal range for a smallblock.
In the meantime I recomend only using OD for highway until you do get it re-geared. A tranny temp guage is also a good idea, as is a big stacked plate tranny cooler.
