questions about the eaton rearend

I got one too!

I have a 1962 GMC chassis out in the backyard I made into a trailer that I put a 74 fleetside bed on for storing and hauling parts in,it has an eaton 3/4 ton 8 lug rear end with 4.56 gears in it--it also was a 2wd with coil springs and rusty control arms!--I should try to move it one of theese days before the tires rot off it and the brakes rust to the drums,if they havent already--It might take its last ride to the scrapyard pretty soon,I might just load it up and cash it all in--money is scarce here lately, but the bills keep coming in without fail...:frown1:

i got another question since im gettin an eaton 2morrow. if it doesnt come with the 5.13 gears can i use the 14 bolt gears for it?? if not how do i go about gettin gears?

i didnt feel like putting a new thread 2gether figured i should use my old one

i'm glad you did. mind if i hijack it a bit?

first off, finding alternate gears: your best bet is to find another 3rd you can swap in..... wade through the rest of my reply and you'll see.

where can i find info about the eaton/14 bolt hybrids? i have gotten myself mixed up in a 1952 chevy 3600 (3/4 ton) and the rear axle, the 4.56 eaton, is the only thing that sucks about it. those gears coupled with the sm420 4-speed make it almost unuseable on streets with speed limits over 45 mph. if anyone has a 4.11 3rd they want to trade i'd be glad to. if by doing a 14 bolt hybrid i could get 3.73 or something like that it would be even better. the only other good option for getting a more street practical truck is swaping in a t-5 trans and i'd rather not.

also, for those looking for eaton axles keep in mind that the early ones are significantly narrower than current full size axles. on the order of 3-4 inches if memory serves. the 3rd members are the same throughout the years thoug.

most of the people getting rid of these axles are looking to create a streetable mildly rodded pleasure vehicle out of them. the eaton doesn't lend itself easily to that due to the low gearing. aftermarket ring and pinion sets, if you can find them, are prohibitively expensive.

sooooo, disk brakes on an eaton.... where do i find more?

for those looking for axles, the best resource i've found online for the old chevy iron is www.stovebolt.com. i'm baldredhead over there too, friendly and informative bunch of gearheads they are.

well this one is out of a 72 k20 pickup and appears to be normal width. ill look at it after i get it and see what gears it has. only reason im getting it besides the cool factor is that its 50$ and it will save me time from swapping my 14 bolt into my trail rig.

how big are the shafts?? 1.5??

It all depends on if you measure the major or minor diameter of the splines. The flat peak of the spline is real close to 1.7??? and the valley of the splines are close to 1.5???
They are strong for factory offerings but such coarse splines could hammer back and forth causing premature spline wear/slop with abuse and high usage.

ahh ya i see. so the shafts are as big as 14 bolt ones but less spline. that would make them weaker. hmm o well i can swap 14 bolt stuff in ive found hundreds of those. hopefully its the normal with. truck looks to be 72' model or so.

eatons common as dirt can get them for around 150 each along with the dana 60 rears, my 71 dually has 4.57 in its Ho72 axle
can get 14 FF for same or less too
i plan on dumping the 4.57 ho72 dually from the 71 and putting a 14 fF axle under with 3.73 so i can actually drive the truck long distance(more than a few miles at a time)
so if anyone is looking for a good 4.57 eaton whole or parts then lemme know

there was an H110 also it was 11,000lb and 6.17 but rare to find in a c-30, but see them in c40, big 5 lug bolt clamp pattern hubs

that will be the normal width. the narrower ones are pre 55 ish. don't quote me on the year break though. does that 72 have an automatic? if so it's a prime candidate for the 4.11 gears from what i've read.
