okay so ive got a d60 sitting in my garage. soon im going to throw it in the front of my 87 suburban. i'm going from a 4'' to 8'' lift (i'm going to do the 56'' spring swap later i just dont have the time right now but i found a good deal on springs in the next town over)

anyways i was thinking about doing crossover, but looking at the cost and time involved, i dont think ill be able to complete it before next summer. im a full time student in college and also a full time employee. it's been killing me that my truck is inoperable. (and i dont have any money)

so my question is, do i really need to do crossover for what i do? i like to do trails like this with my buddy sometimes:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=4486188529239506529

my truck did it fine with my current setup. 4'' lift and 36''s.

i dont do trails like that all the time. i like running mud pits and hill climbs and those trails out at hollister.

do i really need crossover steering for that?

Do you "need" it? No. After you have it, will you wished you had done it ALOT sooner. Of course you will. If money is tight, just search around and piece something together or just save up and get everything at once.

Wow that yellow k5 in that vid is all badass! haha stock steering is really gonna suck with 8" lift too. You'd have to get a raised steering arm and still it would suck. I'd still be running stock steering on mine tho if it weren't for the 52"s. And you have all kinds of money I dont know what your complaining about. Here Ill make it easy for you I'm bored:

Used 4" lift rear springs (56"s and dont move the rear spring hanger or 52"s anmd move it...but with stiff lift springs 56"s should be fine :dunno:): About $50
Longer shackles (make em yourself): $15
b52s" from diy4x.com (Or just move it like I did or use a "C" shaped peice of metal bolted on to the bottom of the body mount and bracket): $165 or free
~15" travel shocks: $80 on summit
Longer brakelines: $50 ?? Dunno how much, could always find some used prob too

So... $195-$360 for everything youd need to lift the front 8"

Crossover:
2wd box: $15-$50 or so
Pitman arm: $75 from wfo concepts
Draglink: $95 from wfo concepts
d60 steering arm: $110 from wfo
Use your stock ends and you end up paying around $300

Rear lift:
Shackle flip from diy4x.com: $195 w/ shackles

And then you could keep your 4" blocks :shame: and be done or you could do a 64" swap rear
4" 64"s: $100 ??
So about $300 or so all togethor

So for around $900 (plus other random nickle and dime things like your gonna need a new steering pump cause youve already burned up yours and your gonna have to buy hubs for your d60 etc etc) you could have x over 56"s or 52"s front, 64"s rear, have your 8" of lift, actually able to steer. And remember you can sell your current lift kit for about $200. Or you could pay for generic lift kit and be up in the air with less work, but if ya already wanna do longer springs later on you might as well do it now

i couldn't even imagine 8" of lift with stock steering on a D60. You would need to find a TALL steering block which is not a very safe thing to do. I'm not even sure there is a block tall enough to make the stock steering work with that much lift. Crossover steering isn't that much money considering what it would cost you to repair damage from some busted steering studs and block that failed.

time really isnt a factor with crossover. that was probably one of the easier mods i did. take you like 2 hours to hook it all up

Yep, and talk about a turning radius. Way better than stock would ever be.

look up jeepfab on ebay, i just got one of there steering arms for 66bucks, taper hole for a tierod, and goes over your existing cap! then from 4wheel parts a super lift part number 1104 i believe is the drop pitman arm you need, for 70bucks, then sky manufacturing for the drag link, and napa for tie rod ends, and you got a cross over set for..pretty damn cheap. plus the box.. but those are cheap too!

Jeebus!

Tell those morons in the back of the yellow rig to sit down and put some seatbelts on!!!

I wouldn't even take my stock steering set up 60 on a trail like that. After the first few trips out after going 1 ton I HAD to do SOMETHING to get rid of that set up. I only have 6" lift. I had a 2" drop drag link and a 3" steering block. I got to the point where I was relying on the twin stix 205 to make the truck turn left since the wheels wouldn't turn that way very much. That K5 flexes nice. What are the front suspension specs?

A lil advice. Buy the drag link ends to to the crossover bar from the same vender. Note- that 1104 pitman arm will likely have to be reamed out.

IMO i would just throw it in, and not do the crossover until you have money, save for highsteer as well and it makes everything out of the way..

your looking at quite a few bucks for the setup but with that i would use ti, hell i want it for mud!

im in the chevy militia as well.

really? can i see a pic of your rig? me and a couple of the guys are doing a pismo trip this weekend. its gonna be fun.

yeah i'm gonna just put it in there like it is right now, and basically leave it until i have money for the crossover parts. i'm going to get some 8'' front lift springs in a couple days so i'm just gonna leave that off too until i get all the parts for crossover.

52"s front, ~7" shackle, 14.5" travel pro comp es9000's (their too short I think, but any longer and theyll bottom out all easy). Buildup thread here:

If I were you, too save a little money, do what I did and order the draglink and pitman arm from wfo and use your stock draglink ends. They're plenty strong in my opinion. Thats another reason I bought from wfo, everything worked with my stock ends.

well not for me. i have no plans to die out on the trail. its actually pretty fun to stand up in the back. just gotta make sure you know what your doing and where to put your feet. the rollbar helps a lot too. a lot easier to scramble out if it starts to roll too

I hate to be a DIICK, but those sound like the famous last words of a fool.
