I am thinking I may just go with the crate 190HP motor as a replacement for my worn out stock TBI motor in my 1987 K5 Blazer. Would this be a direct drop in as far as my ECM and PROM are concerned?

Any one have a link to the best deal on the 190 HP crate? All I can seem to find is the 2 piece rear main seal style. I want the ONE piece rear main.

If i was to put a cam in that motor after the warrany period is up would I need to program or as long as its a "TBI compatable" cam will I be ok running the factory program?:dunno:

Thanks guys!

The one I have is a 1 piece main seal, just make sure it's for tbi replacement 87 to 95 Chevy truck. I got mine from summit. 1800 out the door couple years ago.

It will be a drop in unit as long as it states its for use in a 87-95 TBI truck. If it says anything else or doesnt say that, it wont be drop in. The cam wont be right and the two center intake bolts wont be at the right angle for the tbi intake.

I just put in a new 290 horse tbi motor into my Jimmy 3 weeks ago. I got it from Pacmachineco out of Portland, OR. It is running great so far. the cost of it is only 1495.00 for a 2 bolt main or 1695.00 for the 4 bolt main. Plus the have a 7 year 70k warranty that you get when you send back the warranty registration form after the initial break in is done. check them out at pacmachineco.com

got mine from scoogin-dickey with vortec heads...$2500 shipped :waytogo:

I got this one...clicky (s-d didn't have a decent pic)

Whats the real power difference between running vortec and non vortec heads?

I would have to get a tune. I see you are running a carb. I want to keep my injection.

*noob alert*

What would I need to run the motor linked to above?

Looks like it runs a surp setup could I used my v-belt crank pulley on it so I can use my current ac and alternator?

It's a TBI motor, it'll work with injection...I have a TPI unit and an Edelbrock TBI multipoint unit, can't decide which to use. Hey,...I notice they're offering free shipping! :eek1:

re the heads...IMO they are the best bang-for-the-buck going. you're looking at a solid 30hp gain.

hate to say but check out the dealer. i got mine from GM 4 bolt main 290 hp 310 ft lbs with 5 year 100k warr. 1850.00

I just noticed that myself.

Can I run my v belt setup on that block? How about my 87 style intake manifold?

So its totally plug and play then? No tune no egr differences?

My brackets came off the 89 it was intended for...I imagine v brackets would work just fine, it has the 3 holes in the heads.

Slap on your injection & go. Do note you will need a Vortec manifold to go with it.

That's why I went carb, price . The Weiand was under $200, the Vortec TPI base is over $400...

My multiport conversion unit is Vortec, but it's smog compliant...(hard to adjust!)

My dealer wanted 4-5k...they were on crack!

talking about not being able to buy bulk, blah blah, blah...

They local Chevy place here has been acting like they sell mercedes or something for years...very attitudinal.

if you want to run a serp belt set up
you have to change alt, ps pump, ac aompressor, (and hoses), water pump and pulley, and yes the crank pulley also. the water pump looks the same but the inpeller on the inside spins the oposite way and on that note the clutch fan as well has to be changed. the brackets on the engine are different as well if your wanting to do it it's not bad no wiring involved . the alternator and ac are swapped on different sides the wiring harness reaches both just fine the harness plug ins are the exact same you just have to route them on different sides of the intake manifold..

thats way to high. i just bought another cate motor for my 99 yukon that one was only 2250. one month the burb the very next month the yukon no oil pressure and a strange noise like someone play a drum under the hood. here we go again visa

TBI is "nice" for the fact that you can run a carb to TBI adapter for maybe $25, and run a much cheaper carb Vortec manifold. Heck, TBI Vortec manifold may not be crazy expensive anymore.

Vortec heads and expensive intakes aren't worth it IMO. You can get aftermarket heads with the "standard" intake bolt patterns, negating the need for Vortec-specific intakes. Again, irrelevant for TBI motors IMO, but on my Vortec TPI, were I to do it again, it would be aftermarket heads, with the stock TPI base. Cost would have been about the same.

When I was looking for a motor, I checked with GM. they wanted 1800 for the 190 horse crate motor. 300 horse was almost 2500. that was less than 2 months ago
