I just recently picked up a 1996 Sierra, a few things about it... it has an 8.1 motor with a built 4L85E trans with a tow shift kit, some air bags, and I'm installing an electronic brake control unit hopefully tomorrow. Downside: 6" lift on 35" bfg mud terrains..

Here's the question: How do you guys think it'll do towing a 26ft toy hauler loaded with 4 quads inside?

Any insight on this is greatly appreciated!

Oh ya and cooling isn't an issue plenty of coolers and gauges on motor and trans ;)

Clearly, an 8.1L conversion if that is what is in there.

Badge and z71 emblem show that it started life as a 1/2 ton, 6 lug still?

You need a stronger rear axle than the 10 bolt, hope its a 14sf at least with all that weight!

If its got a SF, or has a FF swapped in....you'll probably do ok. See what rear springs are in there too, 1/2 ton ones wont' really like that weight.

Bumper pull trailer?

GOOD weight distribution / sway control setup will be a lifesaver.

Overall, if most of the truck has been upgraded to 3/4 ton status and beyond, you'll be fine.

if not, you will quickly find the weaker, 1/2 ton links in the setup.

Lol ya its a swap of course. It does have a sf in the back, rear springs I'm not sure what the procomp lift kits come with if its a 2" leaf and 4" block... But its a 6" lift. I've read that bags help... I guess we'll have to see how it does LOL..

Thanks for the response :-)

Bags or not, i'd throw some 3/4 or 1 ton springs in there.

Can't be that expensive, and will help a lot.

Sweet truck, how about some pics of the 8.1 when you get home from your trip.
