Hey Ya'll. Just a quick question for yuh. On an '89 Blazer, the filler plug on the transfer case is what size? I don't have anything that big but I can't afford to go buy a whole new set of sockets or wrenches soo... I think it's 22mm but I wanted to check with the experts before going out and dumping cash on it.

Bonus Question: If you hear the whining from the transfer case and it won't shift into 4wd w/o grinding and fighting it, is it too late for the xfer case? Is the chain already trashed if you hear it? Thanks Ya'll

The proper size is 30mm. I just went outside and verified this with the socket I bought and I measured the drain/fill plugs.

Thanks, I bet either would work but I need a tight fit because that darn plug is really in there! I tried to remove it with a crescent wrench and hammer and got nowhere. I didnt want to strip the bolt with the crescent wrench so I gave up on using that. Anyway, thanks again!

Typically it's not the chain you need to worry about. A bit of whine while in 4hi is normal, louder in 4lo also normal. Maybe change your shifting methods. I can shift my t-case from 4hi to 2 while the truck is rolling without issue. When shifting into 4hi from 2 I usually get out and lock in the front hubs first so that the front drive shaft is turning already, nothing inside needs to start from zero it just all synchs up in one motion. Shifting into 4lo though I've had the best luck with the trans in park and no load on the t-case. Basically, hold the brake, put trans in P (keeps the trans output shaft from spinning), keep holding the brake, shift t-case to 4lo, put trans in gear, release brake and go.

Tap on the end of the plug with the hammer (if that isn't what you already did) and then use the proper 30mm socket. The problem with these plugs is that they have a very shallow gripping area so you want the tightest fit possible and 30mm is 1.181" and fits pretty snug whereas a 1 3/16" is 1.1875" and believe it or not that extra .0065" is just enough to round the corners on the plug and ruin your day.

Thanks 4X4 High. I figured it was metric and I def need the snug fit. I have already tapped it with a hammer. Thanks though.

496 Truck, the whining comes from the xfer case even when the 4 wheel drive is not engaged. I see the front and rear seals are leaking (from sand dang it!) but I don't think it's a bad leak. The xferf case was rebuilt 5 years ago, after a loud clunk I no longer had power to the wheels. Don't wanna end up there again and can't afford to have it rebuilt! I hope the whining is just b?c it is low on transmission fluid.

BTW, it calls for Dexron II transmission fluid but the guy at the parts store said to use Dexron III instead. Is that gonna be ok? Or will it mix with the Dexron II already in the case (If there is any left in it) and like turn to gell?

Dexron III replaced Dexron II, I don't think you can even find/buy Dexron II anymore.
