Quick Spark Plug Help..

I did a quick search and found some decent info but looking for more specific help. I bought all new plug wires from MSD and now need to get the Spark Plugs. What make and model of plug do you recommend. I run a 400sbc with a Delco HEI. NO platinum, right? And what should the I set the plug gap at. Thanks

X2 on the gap. Plug gap for my '91 TBI 350 is 0.035"

I put cheap champions in last time. :dunno:
 
Thanks fellas. I appreciate the responses. I use delco R45T's and used the gap I had on the plugs I took out, .040. It took me most of the damn day to do this. I know, I know, but with the drivers side so full of brake crap, alternator, steering shaft, me using Moroso wire heat sleeves, and me bring a big fat a$$ it made this go slow. Also, the PO decided to tack weld the inner fender to the outer in some places thus limiting access didn't help the situation. Passangers side was fairly quick considering I tended to sit down occasionally and watch college football on the garage TV too. Seems to run great and looks nice too. Thanks for the help fellas.

i have a upgraded coil with msd so i gap mine at .040.ive had good experience with autolite plugs.i will never use champion plugs in anything i own.pure junk in my opinion.never have had good experience with them in anything i own besides lawnmowers.
 
There're a couple of things that I rember from som dyno testing that we did. Champion and ANYTHING Bosch suck ballz. They LOST power over a worn out V-Power
 
You want the biggest gap that the ignition can reliably spark across. As the coil and other ignition components age they will get weaker, so a larger gap wouldn't be possible (unless you upgrade the ignition).
 
HEI will EASILY jump .060" gap. As a matter of fact, I believe Olds used a .080" gap for quite some time on the exact same ignition components.

I've tried .060" gap, no difference in how it ran, and no discernible difference in mileage.
 
Yeah, the reason for my original post was because my rig was running real irratic. Bad hesitation, rough running as if the cylinders were missing, seemed like the typical electrical problems with the engine. When I checked the plug wires several of them look almost as if they were "burnt through" and were arching out on the headers which I suppose means that the plug wasn't getting the proper spark to make combustion complete. Also, had cracked and splitting wires along with thme being hardened from the excessive heat from the headers which are real tight to the plug wires. After replaceing them the blazer runns great. Now the biggest issue is keeping the plug wires away and as insulated from the headers as possible. Here is what I used to help the issue with the new wires.

I also used the shrink sleeves to help hold them in place at each end.

I am now looking for a slip on heat shield for the spark plug boot too. Saw something the other day that is a heat sheild for them that wraps around the boot and uses a velcro closure just like you'd put on a starter but make for plug boots. Anyone seen this fellas?
