my girlfriend races dirt-track and on their cars, they use a "quick steer" to increase steering response by 1:2 or 1.5:1....ive been thinking about it for a long time that this would be kinda cool on my rig but i think it may be a little TOO responsive when i drive it on the road...mabey the 1.5:1 would be a good comprimise....do yall see any pros-cons?

the issue i see with this is if you were driving down the road and someone pulled out in front of you or something happened where you had to swerve your reaction would be to crank the wheel and that little crank would turn you to full lock and be bad and possibly cause a roll over

When you have a big mean nasty offroad truck with a big heavy duty steel tube winch bumper you DONT SWERVE! You run the hell over them :D.

yea, i would swerve (but the 'ole lady may).....i could see how that may be dangerous, but even with the 1.5:1?

and im confused as whyi woul loose power? how?

im interested in how it works. i would like 4 turns instead of 6. im going to be running hydro assist as well so i dont think i would have any issues with anything. when your driving the big truck, nobody is going to try to cut you off or get in front of you. in my experience, everyone gets out of my way.

Just go ahead and do it. Trial and error. Live and learn. If it don't perform to your satisfaction, remove it and install the old box again.

eh yea, i drive my truck on the street quite a bit and i wouldnt feel comfortable having NO mechanical control over my steering at all...that is why i went with hydro assist....

yea try it out and report back. if it works well it will added to my "to do" list :)

With hydro assist, I would bet that the steering box would try to move fluid to the ram much faster than the pump could provide it. Quicker steering means the pump needs to fill the ram with fluid faster, which will probably result in slower steering. It may take less turns lock to lock but it will still take at least the same amount of time for the pump to fill the ram.

what if you were running a high performance steering pump? Im going to be getting one for when i get hydro-assist. i know the bigger the ram, the slower the response, but is that because the stock pump is limiting it or is it because the ram simply can go any faster?

hmm...ya i thought about it would be just as slow...but im really just lookin at less movement of the steering wheel on my part...
...but im also curious now about a more bad ass pump, will that increase the speed of the ram?

More flow from the pump = faster response.

For reference (for when you look at aftermarket pumps) the pumps that came in K-series Chevys flow 2.4-3.5 GPM and produce 1100-1450 psi.

You can drill out the fitting in the stock pump a little to allow it to flow more, I wouldn't recommend messing with the pressure.
