Besides using the Jeep XJ steering ujt to eliminate the ragjoint - is there a steering ujt from a modern GM pickup that can be used? I thought I saw someone here on CK5 bolt on something from a late model GM truck (of course i can't find it now!)?

I can see not using the XJ shaft if you have an older chevy, since the steering box splines are different. But really, it's worth getting a newer rebuilt unit, running the new lines and switching to an XJ.

Otherwise, you can grab an XJ and weld the factory chevy end to it. Either way, I wouldn't keep using the upper half of the factory shaft anyhow. That part also gets sloppy.

Borgeson makes a new unit. But it costs like $250 or some craziness.
Dude this is ck5. If there was a cheap good alternative made by gm that would keep is from using jeep parts. You can bet your ass that would be the standard. We use the xj because its cheap, plentiful in junk yards, cheap, and it works.

Yeah ok looks like the XJ swap is the one to do. Thanks guys.

Trust me (and CKers) this is one of the best mods you can do to our rigs, worth the price of admission. I installed one years ago and have had zero issues and really tightened up my steering.

Some guys used to come to the junkyard looking for late 80's GM G-10 vans, they had a factory double u-joint in the steering shaft to allow for a different steering colum placement on ones after 1982 or so--that they adapted to other vehicles like hot rods,trucks,etc...they might be a bolt on deal at the colum and steering box ends ,you'd have to mate them to the old shaft probably as the van shaft was shorter..

My co-worker used a 70's dodge power wagon steering shaft in a GM 4x4 like my 82,that bolted up with monor tweaking ,that had a u-joint on both ends..

I may be getting a jeep shaft for my '82,the rag joint looks like its either going to rip apart or rust away soon..
