See picture of random parts that were in trunk when I bought my blazer. Looks like trash but I just want to make sure I'm not throwing away anything valuable - you guys recognize any of the brackets or shields? Worth keeping the pulley or dipstick tube?

Much appreciated.

First rule of owning a square body. DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY. Does your rig have headers? Pretty much everything in that picture I have either needed or sold to someone in the last 2 years. Most things in the pics you probably already have on your K5, toss up some pics of your engine. These are all common parts but there are people that need these kind of things. I will pay shipping if no one here needs anything.

What are the brackets for? And the long rods?

Accidentally included a picture of dashboard and I cannot delete it

OK first off you have 4 sheet metal heat shields that will bolt to your block by your spark plugs that will be kinda hard to install but still doable, pretty much every thing else.. ps brackets, smog pump brackets, motor mounts is already installed on your rig.
Honesty I should know what the rods are but I am pretty heavily medicated right now from a foot injury. I am thinking support rods for under the dash?

EDIT Is your transmission dipstick actually bolted down, the TUBE should not move around. If you can move the tube the hold down bracket is probably broken off.

Those long torque rods go from the motor mount bolts to the k cast transmission bellhousing cover. The bracket circled sandwiches between the motor mount bolts on the block and the clamshell brackets...the torque rod bolts to those.

That's right.and there should be one more bracket like that one.

Here is the rods installed on my blazer...
I dont have any good pics of the sandwiched bracket the rods bolt to...

The round thing right behind the rods I believe should be for your cruise control. I cannot tell from your pics if you already have one installed.

Do not toss those motor mount rods!
Sell them or keep them.
Or put them back on if they are off.

Thank you guys for the heads up. Turns out my truck does not have the rods installed. I assume they help keep the transmission straight when accelerating/decelerating? I will put them back on, but how bad is it to drive temporarily without the rods?

its not bad at all people just take em off to service things or don know what there for
wont hurt anything

They are " stress bars" the importance of them are hugely debated on this site.
All I know is they put them on these trucks and gmt400 trucks.
I have broken the bell housing off a turbo 400 that didn't have these bars installed. I then got them and installed them and no longer had a problem so I am pro stress bars/rods

I figure gm put them there on thousands of trucks. at a huge cost. They obviously felt the need for them.

If you are not abusing the truck short term you're ok.
Just plan on putting them back on it protects the transmission bell housing.

My '82 K2500 had those strut bars hanging under the truck when I bought it..they were bolted on at the motor mount pad bracket--but the TH400 someone put in it was not a K case that had the provision for the aluminum dust cover for the strut bars to bolt onto--they were just zip tied up out of the way..

I was told the TH400 was from a big block Chevelle that was rebuilt with a shift kit and had low miles, and the owner decided to swap in a Muncie 4 speed setup in the car instead,so the former owner of the truck snagged it for the truck..it did have the 6 bolt low stall speed diesel converter though,I'm guessing it was swapped in from the original truck TH400..

I have plowed some very deep snows with this pickup over the 15 years I've owned it and haven't had the bell housing crack or any other issues yet--I haven't taken it off roading or got it airborne, but I have rammed some hard packed snowbanks dozens of times and haven't busted it yet..

I say the strut bars are nice to have, but probably not a must for on road use..if you had a NP203 or NP205 hanging off the back of it then yeah,I'd want them for sure--but a NP208 isn't that heavy and it does have a long truss bar that bolts to one bell housing bolt to help keep it from stressing the tailshaft housing on the transmission..

I have broken two transfer cases since I took those bars off.... I am looking for another set.

I'd think the bell housing would break first--those bars beef up that area the most..
I think the frame brace used on the NP203 and 205's were better than the truss rod to the bell housing bolt setup.but I suppose heavy flexing off road could stress a transfer case with the frame brace enough to do damage..
