I have the chance to grab a 1993 range rover LWB for $1000 bucks. It needs a head gasket. It has a "like new" arb bumper and brand new xd9000 warn winch on it (retail $1100) I think I'm gonna grab it just to get the winch. But my question is.... Does any one know if anything about these is desirable? Axles? driveline? Is there anything I can make my money back on? Oh and it also has BRAND new tires on it

Bumper sticker says THE PARTS FALLING OFF THIS CAR ARE OF THE FINEST BRITISH MANUFACTURE. :haha:

Bumper and winch could prolly be sold separate, otherwise you're most likely gonna have to sell the the thing whole.

Just give it to me! :D I love Range Rovers!

The V8's are pretty cool, they are an all aluminum engine based of a 1960's Buick original design. I think the year you are looking at would have a 3.9L EFI. They can be bored out to (IIRC) up to 5.0L, the largest factory displacement was 4.6L, I think (Range Rover 4.6HSE). One thing I think is cool is both diffs are offset to the same side (passenger side) so, if one clears an obstacle, the other one will too!

None of the parts are really too desirable outside of Land Rover circles but, a good number of them have been discontinued (no longer produced OEM) on the Classics like yours so, parts values are going up.

I worked inside of a Rover dealership 99-01.

BIGGEST. POS. EVER.

I'm no mechanical engineer but I can't see paying that much for a vehicle that started falling apart from the moment they were delivered to the dealership. Even in the "Empire" parts of the world folks joke about them falling apart and always needing fixing.

Bah.

THe el;ectrical will make our seem liek they were designed by the greatest electrical engineers ever. Lucas Electrical did the electrical work on those and they did a piss poor job. A friend bought one for 1100 and wheeled it till it died. Sold it for 450. He thought it was a deal for an 18 month rental.

Well, if you can get past the ****ty GEMS engine management and other electrics, they are actually pretty stout trail ready trucks out of the box. Slow, air suspension has to be changed for coils.

its the 4.2 vintage.. looks as though someone else thought the air ride sucked cause thats swapped out for coils already.. I think I might grab it anyway just for the winch and the new tires. those will work on one of my other rigs. worst case I get a few bucks for scrap?

PM Ssped, he is a member here who works for a large RR dealership in the Orange County area and he is one of the guys that takes the snooty customers out on offroad treks. Seems to know a bunch about RR's.

Yeah, I would be tempted to grab it too, although their rep for unreliability scares me... Look like they would be cool to start with for a motor swap. I hear the transfercases were pretty strong, and geared almost 3:1.
Axles are offset - I like
Brakes are small (really small and solid/unvented rotors) - I don't like.

Only person I know who has one bought it for $800 because of engine trouble...
He now has more than $6K into it because of engine trouble.
He also talks **** about my blazer being a,"giant GM P.O.S".
He ALSO talks **** about my other friends LX450 that I built...
I think it takes a special kind of person, to continuosly pay the dealer to rebuild your POS, while making fun of everyone elses POSs, as they drive away laughing at you.

I'll say this about the Rovers...

...the dealership I was working in had over 100 parking spots...something like 130 and they were also a Porsche dealership. At any given time around 100 of those spots were filled with vehicles requiring work. I'd say at any given time 90-95% of them were Rovers needing repair.

Also, while I was there, I only saw ONE that needed repair that might have been caused by wheeling and that was a Defender, not a RR or LR.

Actually, I have seen one that was kick ass. Guy in England owned it, had a supercharged 350 in it, a GM drivetrain, and Toyota Land Cruiser axles.

4.2 is close enough that a GM TBI might be adaptable to run on it.

I just got ride of a '93 Rover that was given (given up on by a friend) to me. It would break while parked. The fuel pump continually had a short somewhere. I couldn't get anyone to buy it. I gave it away to the first person who would come get it.

Yep..... sounds like this is gonna be a strip-and-scrap! A worthy one though..... the winch, bumper, and tires seem to be a good enough reason to buy the whole thing... I tried buying just the add ons but no go

sounds like a good deal to me.winch and bumper are worth at least 600.if the tires are new and of a decent brand and size,id say anether 400.so 1000 bucks right there.scrap the rest and you will mke about 200 bucks more,at least around here they give 200 a car.my buddy scraps a couple a year.

The bodies on teh Discoveries were Aluminum. The RRs might have been also, so you may make out better than if it was steel.

Extra points if you pronounce it "Al-lou-MIN-E-uhm" with a Brit accent.
