Until my beast can get a proper silver paintjob and upholstery I am thinking of trying to "rat-rod-ify" it..

But I want it to look like it has a little class.. not just an old primered truck.. so maybe some flames.. and some pinstriping.. and maybe a rattle can flat clear coat over the primer? Would this work?

Has anyone seen any true rat rod style K5s around?

Rat rod
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Rat rod is a newly developed name for the original hot rod style of the early 1950s. A rat rod is usually a vehicle that has had many of its non-critical parts removed. They are usually finished in primer-like paints and are often period correct. They are very often the conglomeration of parts and pieces of different makes and models.

A typical rat rod is an early 1930s coupe or roadster with the body set low on the frame, fenders removed, whitewall tires, big-little tire combos, exposed engine bay, home-made upholstery, and lots of power.

It has become popular to use the term for a similar treatment on cars from the 1950s and early 1960s as well. These vehicles (known as, Custom cars, Kustoms,Leadsleds or Sleds) were usually not originally high performance vehicles, but usually a large 2-door sedan with a chopped down roofline, lowered suspension, and most of the little trim work removed.

When I get back, I'm going to finish my :k5: like that. I already started before I had to come to Kuwait. I'm using Blitz Black from John Deere. I started looking into that style when I planned on building a 69 VW Fasty rat-rod.:D But I put that plan on the backburner until I finish my Aussie Falcon.

Awsome! :D

Are you going to try to whitewall your tires at all? I am curious how it would look on big tires.. and how much of them to whitewall.

I am thinking about painting my grille and wheels red as well.

Were you thinking about flames or scallops or anything?

It's going to stay kind of high and with big tires.. so i don't know how it will look... maybe I should try some computer simulations first.. :)

There is a 2wd Blazer in the East Valley of PHX area I see every morning . Its black primer , 4/6 drop ( or just looks like it ) , wide tires rear , skinny fronts , on 2wd Ralley rims painted Black . And he flamed it . Looks kinda neat :D

tRustyK5, looks sweet! All you need is some kind of ratrod graphics and some red rims.. maybe some whitewalls?

Looks cool!

"Tough Enough" would be a cool nickname for your ride. It looks plenty tough! That beast looks like it could drive through a brick wall.

LOL, if you got a closer look at my truck you'd swear it had been driven through a wall...:doah:

Red rims might be cool...

Is this John Deere Blitz Black paint available in "rattle-can"?

It is pretty cool looking.. it isn't shiny and is ink black..

It all sounds uber-cool. Semi-gloss black is awesome. Red accents, flames, louvers, i like it all except the whitewalls. I was alway going to take my Jeep apart and put bullet holes in it. Like the fenders and stuff. I don't recommend that you try this, of course :D

according to that, i have a rat rod... almost
huge engine (514 cid)
no fenders
no radio/ac/heater
lol

yeah and no seat. :haha:

serioulsy though, if i was gonna build a "rat rod" k5 here's how i'd do it.

69-72 k5, no top
454 with big headers going into dual exhaust coming right out the side, dumping before the rear tires.
4" lift
35/12.5s
pull all (every last bit) of the trim off
flat black.
no top.
white wall the tires (huge whitewalls)
red rims
some red flames, just flat red on the hood and quarters.
maybe a little flame coming off the rear quarters
maybe some light pinstriping around the door handles and the a pillar. definately around the tailgate handle

something like that. a non-lifted 2wd drive one would be done different.

I'm torn about the whitewall aspect.. it is a real key to the look.. but I don't know how it would go over on a big truck.. could easily look ridiculous..

If you were to paint the tires somehow I wonder if you could remove it without ruining your tires?

BranndonC, you would be my hero if you found a grill for your truck and primered it and stuff. But leave the engine exposed..

The cool thing about these Blazers is that the engine compartment is massive.. it seems like you could fit 2 big blocks side by side.. now that would be the ultimate "rat rod" Blazer.. I have no idea if you could mae that work though.
