rattle can primer job

well the weather here went goofy and hit 70 so i decided to sand and primer
my blazer. Turns out when the paint is real bad sun damage it comes off pretty easy.if my phone will ever email the pics to me ill post em up.

my plan is to go over the thing with 80 grit ,120,150,220 and then primer it
was going to use primer sealer on the fiberglass top it was faded real bad,not much paint left. up there but the same on grit for the fiberglass top too.

any suggestions?:dunno:

id say im 75 % done with the 80 grit only the tailgate and passenger side to go.
did the top in 80 and 120 already had to get out my green 9 foot ladder to reach it but got er done

you don't need to do that many sanding steps, you'll be wasting time and paper.. the objective is to be able to remove the previous grits scratches...

you can do 80 than straight to 220 depending on the sanding method.. I often just 80 than 180, prime.... good grit for primer to stick too.. but if your gonna be using thinner rattlecan stuff, it'll be easier to fill 220's.. worst case, a quickie 150 in between to knock the 80's down a bit prior to the 220...

and your really not gonna be using a "sealer".. sealer is a thin coat of unsanded primer put on top of fill primer just prior to paint...


just be aware that rattlecan primer is soft cr@p that will not be a good base for any kind of catalyzed paint... if it's just gonna get some rusto or similar, disregard...
 
coll can skip some of the grit,i was planing on painting it flat black,it is a mud toy after all.
my brother bought me the primer the paint is from DuPont and im using a criss cross pattern like they showed on trucks

yeah, ok, that's what I figured...

honestly, if your gonna rattlecan, I'd suggest just getting the regular rusto.. white cans...

duplicolor stuff generally sucks balls...
 
FWIW when using both duplicolor and rustoleum rattle can high fill primers on the SAAB the rustoleum was absolutely terrible to sand. Literally 10-20 seconds and the paper was completely plugged vs sanding two whole panels with the duplicolor without plugging. Maybe I just got a bad batch but I ended up spraying two coats of the duplicolor over the whole roof that was painted with rustoleum just so I could sand it. It was not from sanding too soon, either. I came back the next day and it still wouldn't sand. Same temps and shop conditions for spraying both.
 
I am not sanding the primmer, jist don't want to paint over the old flaking paint
 
OK well then the Rustoleum did actually lay down better.
 
ive also noticed if you get the sandable primer its easier to sand and doesnt clog the sand paper
 
that's one of the sucky things about bombs, they constantly change the "lines" and will have multiple names and series out every few yrs these days. sandable, self-tching, sealer, etc and they change can/name every few yrs often..

remarket the same stuff over and over... :haha:

I run the above rusto at work on stuff... the merc enamel is better tho... but the only primer i'll use in bomb is my green zinc... I don't like putting a 2 part paint over the enamel primers... too risky.... usually it's boat parts and than it just gets some green/black...
 
well im done with the sanding tomorrow i will wash it in the morning let it dry and tape and paint
 
Tomorrow ill get some, went to the docs and I have bronchitis so it hurts to breath
