where exactly would it say on the rear axle to know the gear ratio? i got a rear end from a 1986 chevy k5 blazer scottdale because someone blew the rear end out on my 87 blazer and replaced it with a 5 lug, my glove box says my gear ratio is 3.42... im new here and i tried searching to no help. thanks for your input if you do have any

You are probably going to clean out the pumpkin and install new axle grease right? Just read the numbers stamped into the ring gear and do the math. That way you know for sure what gears you have.

Martin

I'm fairly positive that the shafts will interchange between 5 and 6 lug axles. If you have the correct gears in the rear already.

The only way you are going to know what gear is in the axle is to take the diff cover off and find out. If you know for a fact the guy gears have never been changed in that axle, you can talk to the guy you got it from and have him check his glove box, it would say in there with all of the rpo codes. but the only sure fire way is to look for yourself.

Thanks for the input I figure I would jus open it up change the fluids clean it really well, as far as the gears go you jus count both gears then divide right?

Just post up all the numbers you see on the edge of the ring gear and we can tell you the ration and year of manufacture of gear/axle. The whole counting teeth thing is a PITA.

The number of teeth will be stamped into the ring gear. You don't need to count anything.

Damn, those are some high gears 2.73's. This is the part number = gm26018279. The 15 is the tooth count on the pinion gear and the 41 is the tooth count on the ring gear. The last set of numbers would be the production date of the gears and i can't tell you what that is with all the squiggly marks you have there.

can you tell me what exact axle it is

running 35s the highest gear youd want would be 3.73 the lowest would be 4.10 to be able to still have decent gas milage and road speed. As far as the axel what vehicle did it come from and whats the bolt count? You can gear an axel with any gears you want really but unless you want to run 38s or larger you dont really need to go any lower than 4.10. also remember that the gears go numerically oppisit lower gear = s higher number higher gear = s lower number. If you were to run what was already in there it would shorten your ring and pinion life as well as your tranny.

Sorry just seen that it was off a scottsdale. If it were factory it should have been a 10 bolt and it should have had 6 lugs and 3.42 for the gear ratio. I dont think that rear end is factory. I have a 91 scotts dale and that what i have factory. Also dont run the 4 wheel drive with out having the front and rear gear ratios matched.

Ok I jus figures since I have over drive I could go bigger then 410 and yea I don't get how the ratio is that way I picks the axle up cause my gear ratio is3.42 so I figured it would be perfect but I planned on regressing everythig and to see what gears where in there and I disconnected the front axle just for safety also it was 10 bolt

it probably is a stock caseing it sounds like the guy before did a cheap rebuild probably due to budget. It suxs that the gears dont match but it gives you a reason to beef it up. Good luck with that.;)

You could go bigger than 4.10 but even with over drive youd see a differance. My cousin went up to 4.56 running 35s on his jeep and it made a huge difference in top end drive and on gas and has since dialed it back down to 4.10. If the rig isnt a daily driver then gear away. But for me i gotta drive mine daily.

If you don't go with enough gearing when using a 700R4 you will toast the trans. Lugging a 700R4 builds heat and heat is the number one killer of a 700R4.

I would go 4.56 with 35's if your gonna do it just do it once. I ran 4.56'd with 37's and no OD and it was fine. You'll be at a good highway RPM and have a great low range as well.

well i bought 456 now where can i find a how to install gears for this axle and thanks for all the help guys
