REALLY STRONG ½TON REAR END?

ah gotcha that is impressive, warn doesn't make the full floater kits anymore do they?

I just can't see the whole 1/2 ton axle hoopla

Because in some facets, 1/2 ton will work just as good and 3/4 and 1 ton is not the answer. Some disciplines of off road require more attention to weight than others.

If you're not running at least a 38, I wouldn't bother w/ a FF14B, the center section is just too big. A 12B can be made to live w/ 35s and the SF14B is a good choice, too. I've been a big supporter of the 12B, but D60FF is prob a better choice for the 35-37 inch tire.
The only real strong stock 1/2 ton Chevy rear is the SF14B, but they didn't come in a 1/2 in our years. The new Ford rear looks like a very stout set-up. But they arn't populating the junkyards, yet.
With 33s the 1/2 ton stuff will be fine-excluding the Gov-Lock. Put in a good diff and if you worry alot some good shafts. Unless you are building a tow rig, then the FF14B would be a good choice w/ some 33s.

That's the rumor I saw on here no too long ago. I think the $$$$$$$ factor made them not a sucess. Cost for someone was somewhere in the neighborhood of $800 for the parts alone.

That's a boatload of money, but for some people, it works. Be kind of interesting to talk to someone who could home-built a 10/12 FF. Wonder if it's possible.

WEIGHT & CLEARANCE
If I were gonna use 35's or bigger then I would most likely use a 14bolt.
I really wanted to be able to run a full spool but now im thinking I want to much /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Kinda like looking for strong IFS.1/2 T stuff is OK to a certain point. My IFS did OK till I went to 38,then it seemed like I broke something every other time out.Took two yrs to find HiPin D60 when I had money to get it.If you plan on going over 35s go ahead and get 1 T stuff,it'll prob be cheaper in the long run. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

You've got to take into account the type of wheeling you want to do. If you're gonna go big, then stepping up to one-ton is mandatory, but if you want to keep it easy and mild, then 1/2 ton will work.

There are different facets of this sport that require different answers and sometimes those answers are not what the majority will tell ya. Furthermore, some people are just blinded and refuse to accept anything else. It's like voting for a dawg just because they belong to a certain party.

like I think of myself when I give out an opinion and I know myself I am going 14 bolt caue hey I ride hard. I plan to get into the rocks and love to mud and I just plain put the torque to the wheels so I need some 1 tonage under me.

[/ QUOTE ] And on that note, sometimes something bigger then a 1/2 ton axle IS the answer. I understand you high speed desert guys need to stay light, but the rest of us don't. Just think of how much it cost to build a 1/2 ton rear axle to the strenght of the 14 Bolt FF. See where I'm coming from ?? For what y'all will sink into a 12 bolt, I can get a 14 Bolt FF, spacers/wheel adaptors, Detroit Locker, conversion U-joint, and still be money ahead.

But the point that I am getting at is it's an ongoing thing. Someone will come and ask an axle question, a lot of times the poster hasn't said what their plans are going to be with the truck, be it mall crawling, show queen posing, rock crawling, mud running, desert running and/or just a camp rig to head for the hills where 4wd won't be used unless the weather turns nasty and someone will blurt out "14FF/SF blah blah blah so on and so forth" and the poster gets put under the impression that is the only way to go. There are other options out there and sometimes, being a cheap b*******(like myself) doesn't cut it and one has to lay out the cash.

i used to have a rear 10 bolt that had a Warn FF kit in it. Wheeled on 35s with a Trutrac and never had a single breakage. The warn chromemoly 30 spline axle shafts are prolly 2x as strong as the stock poop... and thanks to being full floating, they are no longer bearing the weight of the rig so with respect to real-world use they are quite a bit tougher than the stock stuff indeed. I would have kept my 1/2 ton stuff if I didnt want to run 39.5s (hell, prolly 42s someday) because they were very nicely built.

[/ QUOTE ] I do agree on some points you make. But sence we don't know what the end use would be, the 14 Bolt FF needs to be brought up as a option as well as all the 1/2 ton mods. I'll be the first to admitt that I don't know every aspect of wheeling, and I'll also admit to having to take cost of parts into consitteration. I do like the 3/4 Ton 14 Bolt FF becouse of how cheap one can be had, and how easy they are to install. Not to mention how much stronger they are compaired to a STOCK 1/2 ton rear axle. Now if someone would only make a AFFORDABLE front 14 Bolt FF for my truck I'd be really happy. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I understand being cheap{broke},thats why I jumped on the $50 10.25 .First 1 T swapedin was 69 Eaton with detroit for $100.Would be still using it,but, couldn't get parts for locker{16spl axles}I spent over $1200 on IFS rebuild and was happy till went to 38s.I do 99% of my own work so labor isn't a issue.14FFs can be got around here for $100 lot of times and detroit for them is cheaper than most others.Drove naerly 600 miles for front 60 cause most in this area want $2000 or more for HiPin 60.I thought $1400 was high anyway till I looked around.Only had to replace one axle jount and seals in it.If I count money spent through years prob got bout $20,000 in my rig.Bought it new in 88 so I don't think thats too bad /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

well as bubbaray has stated f*ck the 1ton's. that is my truck in that pic. i run 39.5 ground hawgs 12b rear warn ff kit 5:13 gears and a detroit. the front is a d44 with warn axles arb and 5:13's.... i wheel the sh!t out of that thing and i am talking rock lotsa rocks. i love my 1/2 ton axles i do not baby my truck ask anyone from norcal. i drive it like i stole it. it all adds up to the $$$$$$$$$$. i have yet to break anything on my axles. as far as 1/2 sucking you can go fly a kite as far as i am concerned!!!!!!!!
