Rear Axle Cleanup

Don't think of it as rusted away, think of it as the new self-locating u-bolt feature.

I would run it, and definitely replace the spring perches.
 
Wow! I love the southwest! I wouldn't even know where to start on that kind of rust. I'm sure it's doable but man am I thankful for the weather here when it comes to things like this.

Axles are easy to come by. Thats WAY to far gone. Find another one, you will be glad you did.
 
Unless you have a blaster, I would clean that up with an angle grinder w/flap wheel and then try to assess how deep the pitting/scaling goes. Those tubes are somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" thick (sorry I don't know), so it's not like a little surface rust affects the strength. From the pics, the worst problems are out towards the wheels, but those backing plates can be easily replaced with a disc conversion.
