I was trying to get my brake drum off and realized that it moved up and down 1/8" or so. Is this OK?? Doesn't seem it to me. If not I'll change the bearings too. Just didn't want to go that far with it..
Its only a 12 bolt:doah:

the drum is hub centric. it will flop around on the axle till the wheel is bolted up.

quick check is drum on. 2 lug nuts on hand tight then try and wiggle it.

and there is also a little in and out play on semi float axles. normal play from the c-clip grove width.

try this and recheck and let us know.

I was holding the lug bolts when I checked it. So far I cant get the drum free at all. beating ,prying, etc.

with the brakes adjusted correctly it shouldnt move too much in any direction.if the drum is ovaled out at the stud holes it will move also.make sure the drum is pushed all the way onto the hub flange and that the brakes are adjusted correctly.the axle itself will move a lil in and out but shouldnt hava any up and down movement.the bearing may be worn out if it moves much.

The "logs" in the bearing ride directly on the axle shaft, instead of it having ball bearings with an inner & outer race--chances are both the axle shaft and the bearing rollers have wear, not just the bearing...you can avoid replacing the axle shaft by getting a "repair" bearing that has the rollers offset more,so they ride on an unworn portion of the axle shaft--most parts stores stock them...some guys dont like the idea of using a "wounded" axle shaft though, and prefer to replace it--Dorman now has aftermarket replacement axle shafts available thriugh parts stores that you cant always find used any more if you prefer to replace it..
