Let's put it this way, before I had my Blazer, I had a 90 Bronco. When I first lifted it to 4 inches with 33's, I had the stock vent setup for the rear diff. It was the stock hose that ran from the diff up to the underside of the body with one of those little cap type covers on the end of the tube. On one wheeling trip we did several river crossings. These weren't over the hood type radical crossings, just maybe up to the axles high. On the way home, I looked through my rear view mirror and saw a bunch of brown gunk all over my back window. I pulled over and my rear diff was steaming. I had sucked a ton of water in through the vent tube and now it was boiling out. There wasn't any leaks in the hose, and the connection to the diff was tight. I'm guessing a few times the end dunked under the water, or there was enough splashing going on to send a stream down the tube.
Moral of the story, even with the stock setup and mild wheeling, you can still suck water into your diff if you aren't careful. So I may have gone overkill, but I won't have to worry about it now.
