Rear Bumper w/ Swing Away Spare Tire

I'm confused. That swing away arm and all that on your rig there is from di4yx, but the bumper is custom? which did you do first?

Purchased the swing away tire rack and axle (pivot point) from DIY, then had the bumper made and the axle dropped in, along with the attachment point. In the pic the bolt to latch it down is just dropped in, it is not tightened otherwise the head of the bolt would be down just on top of the bumper.

Yes Sir, but let me say I'm sure it's not the best design. I was just in a crunch for some way to carry a tire. I just made a splint along side the square tubing. Cut the square tubing at the breaking point that would clear my tailgate. Put the two back together using the so called splint. But only wielding the top half to allow the tire to be dropped down. Swing down.... I started with just the idea of a fixed carrier, but then saw I really needs to be able to fold down. My Blazer is not a daily driver so it will not see a lot of use. It will not be folded down that much so I just used a large bolt as the pivot point. I also added another bolt, now a pin to help hold it in place. I also have another bolt to help hold it. I just wanted to make sure it was tight and not rattle. In sure after time with this design it won't take long for that happen. But for now I'm pretty happy with it. All I need to do is weld a nut in the back side and a handle to the bolt that goes thought so I don't have to use a wrench to let it down. The break over point is not great but I didn't want to scrap the hole carrier just to add the folding option!

I don't have the cash flow as 70 Jimmy! Lol! But if I did I love his set up! Here's a closer picture of my home brew! Not the best but it works for now.

I like that, clean and simple. It is similar to the way they do bike racks that go in the hitch, but have a pin so you can fold them.Your`s is obviously more stout. Nice work.

There are pros and cons with every bumper design. The swing-away forces you to lift the wheel/tire up to the mount, but then accessing the tailgate is easy - just swing. The "stinger" style is easy to load the tire, but now you have to lift it up and down every time you want to access the tailgate (although it's much easier to flip the stinger up than to lift the tire by itself).

With any of them, it very important to design rigid locking features for the tire carrier to avoid rattling and minimize the metal fatigue of bouncing a heavy tire off a lever arm. Before you get into a trailer spindle for the swing away, search these forums for the posts about these spindles eventually cracking and breaking off the bumper (they are plenty "strong", but over time the leverage cracks the material above the weld). If you run light 33's or smaller it's probably OK (given that it latches RIGIDLY at the other end), but for anything heavy you need to look at the "double shear" designs or something beefier.
